Flag Etiquette for the American Flag



A large number of Americans display an American flag in their home, on their vehicle, or somewhere on their property. The American flag is a symbol of everything that this country stands for.

There are a large number of guidelines that have been developed for individuals, businesses, or other establishments that display an American flag. A full list of flag etiquette guidelines can be found by performing an internet search or by contacting local or state government officials.

Since a flag is a symbol of the United States and freedom there are penalties for purposely destroying an American flag. Destroying the flag can include actions such as burning, ripping, or trampling it. Individuals who are simply discarding an American flag after it can been worn or ruined for natural reasons are excluded from this etiquette guideline.

During a particular ceremony there are many times when an American Flag must be raised or lowered. When this event is occurring it is common flag etiquette that all individuals face the flag and place their right hand over their heart. This is the similar position that many students take when reciting the pledge of allegiance.

Men or women who are serving in the Armed Forces are required to salute the American when all others are placing their hand over their heart. This salute is similar to the salute that troops give their commanding officers. The salute is used to symbol the respect and dignitary that an individual in uniform has towards the United States and the American flag.

A large number of individuals have materials or merchandise that has a flag design on it. It is considered improper flag etiquette to use a flag on items that will only be temporary used or discarded. A few of these items examples may include paper plates, napkins, or handkerchiefs.

It is also considered proper flag etiquette to make sure that the flag is not worn or used as a costume or as a piece of clothing. Many athletes and government officials are able to wear a small patch of the flag. Shirts and other merchandise can be purchased with a flag design; however, the material should not be made from an actual American flag.

There is not a set of flag etiquette guidelines or rules for cleaning an American flag. The majority of new flags are made from materials that can be hand washed or placed inside a traditional washing machine. It is important that all flag instructions or tags are properly read before washing a flag with any cleaning chemicals.

Individuals who are in possession of an older flag may wish to have the flag professionally cleaned. Older flags are often valuable in a number of ways; therefore, they should be treated and handled with professional care. Since a large number of older American flags may be in delicate shape it is possible to ruin them without purposely meaning to do so.

The United States flag is an item that many American treasure and cherish. For this reason many individuals choose to follow a few of the above mentioned flag etiquette tips. Many times flag etiquette is not required by law, but it is used to as a way to offer guidance to Americans who wish to show their respect to their country and the flag.
