Foods That Lower Blood Pressure



If you find out that you have high blood pressure, your first inclination might be to want to take drugs to lower it. There is a more natural alternative, however, and that is to eat foods that lower blood pressure. Though there may be times when medication is necessary, it is always a good idea to look for more natural treatments, even if that means still taking medication but needing less of a dosage.

There is no great secret about foods that lower blood pressure. They are basic foods that are good for overall health, and it makes sense to eat them anyway. To help lower blood pressure, it is even more important to stick to these kinds of foods.

- Whole grains: There are so many good reasons to eat whole grains, and helping to lower your blood pressure is one of them. The high fiber and low glycemic index rating of whole grains makes them one of the best foods that lower blood pressure. The best way to eat whole grains is in as pure a form as possible. Brown rice, oatmeal, and whole grain cereals with no added sugars are good sources.

- Fruits and vegetables: Essential for overall good health, eating fruits and vegetables is especially good for keeping the blood pressure in check. Once again, the high fiber plays a key role, as well as the many essential nutrients that fruits and vegetable provide.

- Fish: The omega-3 fatty acids in fish have been proven to be beneficial for many things. As one of the foods that lower blood pressure, fish is far up on the list, especially fish that is high in these fatty acids, such as salmon and albacore.

- Dairy: Yes, dairy foods such as milk, cheese, and yogurt are foods that lower blood pressure, but there is a catch. High fat dairy foods are counterproductive to lowering blood pressure, but low fat and non-fat dairy foods are beneficial and can help quite a bit. Instead of whole milk, switch to two-percent. One-percent or non-fat is even better.

There is an underlying theme that is easily seen with these foods that lower blood pressure. Except for the suggested fish, they are all very low in fat. The fat in the fish is an extremely beneficial fat. What you want to stay away from is saturated fat. It is also important to watch your salt intake, and try to get to and maintain a healthy weight.
