The best way to begin your garage workbench project is to draw up some plans. If you are not familiar with the process of drawing up plans for projects, then you can use pre-made plans. The best place to look for these would be at your local hardware store. Browse through the many excellent how-to books that they sell and choose one that has plans for a garage workbench. For about ten dollars, you can have the plans for the workbench as well as all of the other project plans included in the book. Once you finish your workbench, you can start on some of the others!
As far as the surface to work on, you can use a piece of plywood placed on top of sawhorses or fairly short ladders. It should be easy to fashion a makeshift work area for constructing your garage workbench. Of course, your makeshift work area will be temporary because you are working on the very thing that will be replacing it. You don't want to put too much thought into your work area, though. Just make sure that it is sturdy and safe, and will hold the things that you need to place on it. Also, you want it to be able to withstand vibration, since you will probably be using power tools on it.
Even though you will probably have pre-made plans for your garage workbench, you can still use your imagination. In fact, you may want to choose plans that are as simple as possible so that you can customize the work bench the way that you want it. You can add drawers or shelves that aren't in the plans as you get better at these things, and can even eventually expand the bench itself to be longer or wider.
Take your time when building your garage workbench. Not only do you want it to last a long time, you also want to learn what you can from building it. After you've learned some basic things about working with wood, you will be able to create a lot of useful and beautiful things on your bench.
