While the outer coat may seem very thin, they have a thick undercoat. This helps to prevent them from absorbing water so they are amazing swimmers. You will find the coloring of a German Short Hair to be a dark shade of brown or white. Many of them have a blend of both colors. They commonly feature spots that can be very small in size or extremely large. The patterns of coloring are very unique on this particular breed of dog. If you see one with any other colors then it isn't a purebred dog. They are extremely intelligent dogs as well as very loyal to their owners. You will find that a German Short Hair is very happy to interact with both people and other dogs. They also seem to do very well interacting with children. This is a kind of pet that does require plenty of attention. They also need lots of room to roam around. Taking them for daily walks is a great way to prevent them from being overweight. With proper training from a young age, you can teach a German Short Haired Pointer to engage in a variety of activities with you. For the most part they are a very healthy breed. There are some issues with the development of epilepsy but it seems to be more of a genetic nature. Breeders need to look for such medical problems so that they don't continue to breed those with such problems. That way there will be fewer German Short Hair dogs out there suffering from it. With the right diet and care, a German Short Haired Pointer can easily live for about 15 years. If you decide this is the right dog for you there are plenty of breeders out there.
