Get In The Swing With Custom Golf Club Fitting

Listen, anybody can walk into a golf goods warehouse and or professional golf shop and find a set of clubs that ‘feel' right. They can even buy one off special drivers or putters for large amounts of money but if they aren't an exact fit for the club, the club will never fit with them. Now this may satisfy the Sunday golfer but if you are really serious about achieving a good handicap you need custom golf club fitting by a pro.

There are no less than seven success factors that need to be customized to the individual golfer in a custom fitting session. These are shaft length, lie angle, shaft flexibility, shaft type, grip dimensions, club head design and set make up.

Shaft Length: All other things being equal the customized shaft length will enable the golfer to strike the ball without adjustment, on the ‘sweet' spot, shot after shot. Optimizing the power drive from the club head rather than the golfers' swing.

Lie Angle: The precise angle of the club shaft through the centre of the club head will make the club sit parallel to the ground. This is key to avoiding either a hook or a sliced shot. Club toe up and it's a hook. Club heel up and it's a slice.

Shaft Flexibility: The ‘whip' quality of the club, matched to the golfers strength will influence things like the flight path of the ball, the direction, the distance and the repeatability of any given stroke. An unfamiliar flex will cause inconsistent ball striking every time.

Shaft Type: This is also a matter of individual taste through trial and testing. All shafts have different compositions of steel and graphite and different bend characteristics, swing weight and torque ratios.

Grip dimensions: This is largely a matter of what the individual feels most comfortable with and needs to be observed by a professional to find the dimensions that allow a square club return and wrist release.

Clubhead Design: With the slow motion discovery of MOI (moment of inertia) clubhead design can make up for a strike that is off the sweet spot, by cutting down twist through a high MOI and thereby giving greater accuracy.

Set Make Up: This is all about the variety of club selection the golfer keeps in his bag. The variety of materials, designs and combinations of exact function require professional guidance from knowledgeable person to trial and adjust for peak performance.

The seven success factors of club customization as described here give you some idea of the complex and subtle inter-relationships between the golfer and his ball, before he even gats on to the first tee. Only a professional with a trained eye and the aid of modern technology can, such as the ‘launch monitor' can help in developing the perfect partnership between golfer and each of their clubs.

The launch monitor is a computer and video camera with software that measures variables faster than the human eye could possibly hope to at best only ‘guesstimate'. The readout from the launch monitor together with the professional judgment will guide the club coach to matchmake between golfer and clubs.

The psychology of a good golf swing also comes in to play after a club fitting session. With personal and uniquely adapted clubs in the bag all golfers will feel more confident. And as any sportsperson will tell you confidence is 90% of winning.
