Getting Started With Pilates Exercises

In recent years, Pilates has become extremely popular as a way of toning up and staying in shape. Before you decide whether Pilates is right for you, there are a few things you should know first.

The idea behind Pilates is that it is much more than a mere workout or exercise program. Basically, it works to condition the body from the inside out. This is accomplished by focusing on what are known as core muscles. These are generally located in the back and the stomach. In some regards, Pilates is also similar to yoga in that it combines control of both the body and the mind because you must work on proper breathing techniques while performing exact body movements.

The difference between yoga and Pilates; however, is that yoga focuses more on spiritual practices whereas the focus of Pilates really is to become physically toned and conditioned.

Special equipment is needed in order to perform Pilates. Usually this includes at least a mat. You can learn how to perform Pilates either at home or in a class. Depending on your preferences you can either sign up for a private or group class. Unlike other types of exercise routines, with many types of Pilates your own body weight is used for resistance. A series of slow exercises allows you to begin strengthening and stretching your core muscles.

One of the best things about Pilates is that there is a great deal of flexibility and variety. This is because you can choose from almost literally hundreds of exercise in order to accomplish your goals. Usually these exercises are primarily performed either lying down on the floor or sitting on the floor.

There are some types of Pilates in which special equipment can be used in order to provide the necessary resistance to tone and strengthen your muscles. Usually, this involves using special machines outfitted with straps, boards and springs that serve to support your hands and feet while you perform Pilates movements. A wide variety of exercises can usually be performed on these machines. Unless you have this type of special equipment at home, you'll need to sign up for a Pilates class. Pilates exercises designed to be used with a mat can be performed at home, if you choose.

Although it may at first appear that Pilates is difficult to learn and perform, there are certainly numerous benefits associated with this type of conditioning program. Benefits include achieving better posture and balance, more flexibility, greater awareness of your body, relief from back pain, leaner muscles, stronger muscles, better range of motion and less stress. Many people also believe that Pilates can assist with lowering physical and mental tension.

You should be aware that although there are certain innumerable benefits associated with Pilates, this type of conditioning program isn't right for everyone. If you're the type of person who likes to learn things quickly, then this definitely might not be the right program for you because it can take some time to master all the movements. You should also be aware of the fact that the purpose of Pilates is not to help you lose weight.
Rather, it is to help you tone and condition. So, if your goal is to lose weight, you need to either choose another program or combine it with a healthy diet that will assist you in dropping excess pounds.

As with any type of workout routine, you should always check with your doctor before getting started.
