Getting Started on College Application Preparations Early

Many high school students decide early on in the high school career which college they would like to attend more than any other. Unfortunately, this can lead to extreme amounts of stress when it comes time to complete college applications and receive the dreaded rejection or anticipated acceptance letters. The good news is that there are several things you can do to boost your chances of being accepted by the college of your choice.

One of the first things you can do to increase your chances of acceptance is to learn what college review boards look for on college applications. While grades and standardized test scores obviously play an important role in college acceptance rates, in many cases the one thing that college admission review boards look for more than anything is a hint that indicates that a student will make a worthwhile contribution to the college environment. This is why extracurricular activities play such a strong role in college applications. In some cases, students who do not particularly have the best overall GPA or SAT scores may be able to gain acceptance based on the strength of their extra-curricular activities.

When it comes time to choose your extra-curricular activities for the purpose of college applications, keep in mind that this is not a numbers game. Many students are tempted to become involved in as many activities as possible in an effort to impress college application reviewers. This is actually a mistake. Reviewers look for students who can demonstrate passionate involvement in a few select activities rather than mediocre involvement in a wide variety of activities.

At the same time, keep in mind that it’s important to document your communities involvement and activities when it comes time to complete your college applications. This can play a strong role in your chances of acceptance. The most important key here is to show a concern for others as well as global involvement and concern.

College admission review boards also look at the strength of the curriculum the student took while enrolled in high school. Keep in mind that even if you attend a regular public high school, you do have some control of your high school curriculum. Challenging classes that you managed to succeed at can spell success when it comes time to complete college applications.

When it comes to grades, remember that straight A’s may not necessarily be the best way to go. A college review board may be persuaded to accept a student with slightly lower grades who was enrolled in a more challenging curriculum than a student with straight A’s who took a less challenging curriculum. At the same, it’s also important to keep in mind that even if you have one bad course grade, this won’t immediately result in disaster on college applications; if handled correctly. For example, if you took a particularly challenging course; you can document this on your college application. Generally, college admission review boards are looking for grades that represent strong effort and upward trend, so don’t be discouraged by one bad grade.

Finally, when completing college applications don’t forget to take advantage of any after-school work experiences you may have gained. This can definitely be an advantage on college applications because it shows mature responsibility, dedication and development of special interest.

By taking the time to consider the important requirements of college applications as you make your way through high school, you can tremendously boost your chances of acceptance when the time finally arrives.
