Super Sunday Football Title taken by NY Giants

Super Bowls biggest upset was not one without its surprises as the least expected to win, New York Giants, beat the illustrious New England Patriots. The Patriots fell with a measly 14 points, a record low in Super Bowl's long history.

Tom Brady was continually hassled and hit all through the game by Justin Tuck, Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora. This greatly limited the patriots' famed offensive that had earlier set a record with an almost undefeated run through the NFL season-Well, Until Super Bowl Sunday.

The super bowl XLII odds were so much against the New York Giants that Buress admitted," I don't even think anyone expected us to win the ballgame," said Buress. He had earlier predicted that his team would beat the then Shinning Patriots 23-17. He later

“For our defense to go out and play the way it did against Tom Brady, who I have so much respect for, and Randy Moss, the best receiver in football, I would have never imagined that those guys would have held them to 14 points," added Buress.

He further had to admit that his prediction had put a lot of pressure on the defense. This they didn't seem to mind at all as they kept hounding Brady although. His team had replied to his prediction with a dismissive “They (told me) you are giving them too much credit," said Buress. “I said: 'Excuse me,' and they went out and played their hearts out."

The Patriots record in the NFL season was 589 points with Brady made a personal single season record with 50 touch down passes, with Moss making 23. Although the season, no team had managed to keep them under 20 points at any game they played-until Super Bowl XLII Sunday

The giants on their part had won their final 11 road games and had stopped their last three opponents to a highest of only 17 points.

Come the super Bowl and the Giants even outdid themselves and held the Patriots to a record lowest of 14 points. In total, the patriots only managed an offensive total of 274 yards in addition to a 45 yards rushing.

The giants' game plan included putting a lot of pressure to the Patriots offensive. They managed to sack Brady 5 times and hit him a further nine, a record for the usually highly protected player.

“That's wrong, “defensive end Osi Umenyiora said," I hit him that many times by myself. We hit him a lot more than that."

Given the Giants hounding defense, Brady rounded up 266 yards finishing a 29-of-48 and one touch down, a 6-yard pass to Randy Moss with only 2:42 on the clock. This was against a defense which seemed to exhausted to catch on. This was a 12-play , 80 yard drive after which spent defenders walked off field.

First year defense coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said, “You know what, the only thing I was thinking in the final 2 minutes was that we gave up the touchdown that lost us the . . .,"

Even Spagnuolo admitted that the Giants game plan was too make sure that Brady was tackled at every catch he made to cut short the throws and limit the running game as mush as they could, and they managed to keep him in check alright.

He said that the Patriots loss was not because Eli Manning led the giants to a 12-play,83-yard drive that he managed to top up with a 13 yard touch down pass to Buress but rather the tight check placed on Brady-The patriots point man.

Brady admitted that the Giants defense was apt in getting the patriots offensive line mixed up." They were just more than we could handle tonight," said Brady.

Brady must have sensed he wasn't going to get far in this game when Tuck and Kawika Mitchell sacked him on two consecutive plays in quarter two.

The giants' next best play came when new man tackle Jay Alford took on for a spent Fred Robbins and got Brady on a second -and- ten from the patriots 26 yard with only 19 seconds left of play.

The giants could already smell their third super bowl title when in the last seconds Brady made two desperate passes.

The Super Bowl played at the University of Phoenix stadium was one of the biggest upsets in the games history.

The giants had received a rude awakening on their defense a month earlier after the patriots had trounced them in the regular NFL season with 38 points. Brady was on the spotlight for that last season game for 356 yards and four touchdowns. The decision must have been made then to put a lid on Brady and tighten the defensive line- That and they had the super bowl title.

Tuck admitted that “Honestly we were laughing at the TV saying the Patriots were going to win this football game, like we didn't have a shot," Tuck said. “Nobody gave us a shot but these 53 guys in the locker room, the coaching staff and the fans. It's amazing what you can do when a small group of guys get together and believe in one thing."

The giants believe and I guess raw determination carried the title home.
