Ginseng Tea: The Secrets

The botanical name of the plant called Ginseng, Panax, says all about the health benefits the plant can bring to those that use it. Panax stands for all heal' in Greek and it represents what it is thought about the plant properties.

The usage of the plant dates back five thousand years and it is believed to have come from Manciuria. Chinese made it famous, however, through their unshaken trust in the plant benefits. In China, it is believed that drinking Ginseng tea every day will help you live a long healthy life and, in the past, the root was traded against luxury goods, like silk or gold. The qualities of the plant are enhanced in the root that grows in the wild, but due to extensive usage - which led Chinese to import Ginseng from Korea - soon it was needed that the root was cultivated by man.

There are, basically, two types of Ginseng used by people: White Ginseng, and Red Ginseng. The difference is given by the way the root is processed. Because the root can be dried and then used, this process is important. Ginseng plants are let to grow six years before the root is taken and processed. A method is to peel off the skin of the root and then to let the root dry up in the sun. The color resulted is a yellowish white, therefore the name White Ginseng. If the root is simmered with the peel on, it turns reddish, and then it is dried. This is Red Ginseng.

Ginseng is grown in several countries and, from there, there are different variations:

1. Indian Ginseng (Ashwagandha or Withania Somnifera); it grows in India.

2. Asian Ginseng (Panax Ginseng); it grows in China, Korea and Japan.

3. Japanese Ginseng (Panax Japonicum); this one exists only in Japan.

4. Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus Senticosus); it mainly grows in Russia, but also in China and Korea. Its name is delusive, somehow, as this is not exactly Ginseng, and it contains other components then the original plant.

5. Southern Ginseng (Jiaogulan or Gynostemma Pentaphyllum); as the name indicates, it grows in the southern regions, in China, Japan and Korea.

6. Prince Ginseng (Pseudostellaria heterophylla); it grows in the southern Chinese provinces.

7. Brazilian Ginseng (Pfaffia Paniculata); this is from Brazil.

8. Peruvian Ginseng (Maca or Epidium Meyenii); this is found in the Ande Mountains, in Peru and Bolivia.

9. American Ginseng; it is found in Georgia, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Wisconsin, British Columbia, and Ontario.

Ginseng has a long list of health benefits, when it is consumed by men. Even if modern studies did not conclude on the plant properties, many people trust the reputation of the plant and consume it on a regular basis.

Ginseng is considered to be able to restore appetite, to help with digestion and respiration. Also, the plant is used against fatigue, mental or physical. The immune system gets stronger when Ginseng is used; it is also considered an aphrodisiac and as a good remedy for arthritis, asthma, diabetes, and even cancer. For those with too much cholesterol, it reduces the levels of this substance in the blood. You can use it against headaches, against diarrhea and it helps with blood circulation and in treatments of severe diseases like Crohn's Disease and Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome.
