Though the traditional description of golf cart remains largely unchanged at most golf clubs around the world, there are increasingly advances in golf cart technology such that there are a wider variety of golf carts available, with a wide range of new features. The traditional golf cart is a small vehicles powered with a small electrical engine. In fact, the small electrically powered golf cart was the first electrical vehicle that was mass-produced for private consumer use. Today, this traditional two person golf cart design, including a small electrical motor, is still the mainstay as far as golf carts that are used in most private and public golf courses. Though the traditional electrical two person golf cart remains the mainstay of golf vehicles, there have been many additional models and improvements in the variety of features, such that some companies refer to their golf carts as 'golf cars'. It is arguable, however, whether this is indicative of greater products, or merely sale pitch hype. The traditional electric powered golf cart has also grown to larger applications than just golf. For example, these same vehicles are used for general transportation and as such are sometimes called 'neighborhood electric vehicles'. The use of electrical powered vehicles in neighborhoods and other more general applications makes sense for many reasons. The traditional golf cart design is suitable for general transportation applications because they are generally slow and low powered vehicles. This can be important for safety reasons. Many senior citizens enjoy getting around on these vehicles because they are not as much responsibility as driving a car because they are not as heavy and cannot reach such dangerous top speeds as gas powered vehicles. Also, the use of electrical vehicles as general transportation make sense for communities concerned about reducing emissions and keeping an optimal standard of air quality. For example, the use of motorcycles is much more common in cities with many more people. These smaller gas powered vehicles require much less gas and so put out much less pollution. Obvious, electrical powered vehicles don't put out any harmful pollutants. The golf cart seems to have been the main inspiration behind the electric carts that elderly and disabled people can now find to use in their home. A cross between an electric wheelchair and a golf cart, these newer electrical vehicles are great for use indoors and outdoors as well. For this reason, they make suitable transportation for those that require some assistance in getting from place to place, yet require the full range of independence that all adults want. With one of the powered scooters, users can use it around the house, and then simply ride it outside to go shopping or accomplish other outdoor activities. As long as generally safety guidelines are maintained, these are a very safe and efficient for of transportation.
