Good Candidates for Presboypic Lens Replacement

An unavoidable aspect of growing older is presbyopia. This gradual loss of near-vision tasks such as reading and looking at acomputer usually becomes apparent during middle age. As the years progress, theproblem often worsens. Presbyopia occurs  because you grow older, the naturalcrystalline lens in your eyes becomes rigid and loses its ability to focusaccurately.

Hope for presbyopia patients

One of the most effective techniques for counteractingthis natural sight degeneration is the implantation of intraocular lens (IOL).This is an ideal solution if you suffer from presbyopia and would not liketo rely on reading glasses or bifocals.

If presbyopia has made reading small print a frustratingtask, IOL surgery can make your life easier and more enjoyable. This procedurehas provided effective vision correction for millions of people across theworld who suffer from declined visual acuity due to aging and other factors.

Ideal candidates

If you are in good overall health and do not suffer fromany eye diseases, IOLs may be the right fit for you. While you must undergo aneye exam and a review of your medical history to determine whether or not youwill be a candidate for the procedure, here are some guidelines to get an ideaof whether IOL surgery may suit your needs:

If you are between the ages of 21 and 80 and haveexperienced:

  • Blurred vision
  • Difficulty driving at night
  • Difficulty reading
  • An overall diminished vision that is not improved by a recently prescribed pair of contacts or glasses

General requirements

Before qualifying for IOL surgery, you will undergo aneye exam to determine whether you have:

  • Healthy eyes that are disease-free and infection-free
  • Sufficient thickness in your cornea

You may not be a good candidate for IOLs if you:

  • Suffer from diabetes or hepatitis C
  • Have excessive corneal scarring
  • Are pregnant
  • Use a pacemaker
  • Suffer from dry eye syndrome
  • Are taking certain drugs
  • Are HIV positive

During your initial eye exam, it is incredibly importantthat you reveal all medical conditions that you precently have or have recentlyhad, plus all medications that you are currently taking or have taken recently.

Candidates foradvanced technology IOLs

Onlyan exam by the The KhannaInstitute will determine whether you may be a good candidate for advancedtechnology IOLs.

Ifyou have cataracts, you may be a candidate for advanced technology IOLs if you:

  • Are over 50 years old
  • Have pupils that are not too large
  • Have little astigmatism
  • Have eyes that are healthy, other than having cataracts

Advancedtechnology IOLs can correct most degrees of nearsightedness and farsightedness.Astigmatism may also be corrected at the time of implantation with special"relaxing incisions," or after implantation, by performing a LASIKprocedure.

Youlikely will not be a patient for these IOLs if you suffer from:

  • Glaucoma
  • Inside-the-eye inflammation (iritis or uveitis)
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Macular disease
  • Other active eye diseases
  • Have already undergone IOL surgery in that eye

However, prior LASIK surgery will not necessarily exclude you from being a goodcandidate for advanced technology IOLs.
