Google Wave: Creating Waves, Getting Raves

Communication and Collaboration Company executives are touting Google Wave as a communication and collaboration tool in one. During the demo at the conference it was shown how people can send e-mail and chat ala IM style. Unlike IM, however, messages are automatically reflected in the wave even before the user has finished typing. You can also have a private conversation with someone within a group without having to open another window. An impressive feature of the wave is the playback option where users are able to “rewind” the wave so that a person can see how it evolved. This is especially useful if you were added into the wave fairly late into the conversation. You don’t have to comb through the threads to find what you are looking for and you know who replied to which part of the conversation and so on. You can also create blogs and wikis in a wave. As you drag and drop images onto the window, they automatically appear in your blog site. People can easily edit word files and there are plans to include capabilities for excel spreadsheets and other types of documents. 3Ps Google Wave is a product, a platform and a protocol – or the three Ps as Google execs refer to it. It is a platform where developers can create applications to be incorporated in waves. In fact, the reason that Google launched this creation so early was to invite developers to work together on the project, much in the same process as was done with Google Maps. Google Wave is also an open source protocol where anyone can be a wave provider so that you can actually create your own wave service that interoperates with all other wave servers, including that of Google’s. Implications Google Wave certainly is one of the more ground-breaking innovations in recent years but what will this development bring us? Will this render e-mail, as we know it, obsolete? As with all new innovations, there are conflicting views among experts. Some believe that Google Wave will enhance the communication and collaboration process while others are skeptical. It is true that current e-mail functionalities are filled with problems but people have learned to live with these shortcomings. It might not be so easy to get people to give up the already-familiar to learn a new application. It is safe to say that competitors such as Yahoo will certainly be watching this development closely and that they will most likely start thinking about developing a product that will compete with Google Wave. Google Wave as a product is extremely appealing and this new development might cause a lot of people to switch.
