Greasy Hair - What You can Do

Greasy hair is what stylists call hair that looks listless, straggly, and oily. Women who have to deal with this type of hair find it difficult to manage. Styling often seems fruitless, and no cut seems to work well for it. Some people often think that greasy hair is caused by a person's failure to wash it often enough. The truth is that many times people with this type of hair simple have overactive sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands secrete a substance called sebum, which is produced to keep the hair moisturized just enough to make it healthy, but at the same time protect it from too much water saturation. Though you can have oily hair if you don't wash it often enough, people with the problem of overactive sebaceous glands often experience this problem even if they wash their hair every day.

There are more problems associated with chronically greasy hair than just the fact that it doesn't look good. Too much sebum production can cause scalp problems and even loss of hair. It can even cause acne to form on the scalp, as well as the face, back of the neck, and in extreme cases, on the back. Because of these things, there is a lot more reason to try to take care of greasy hair than just for aesthetic purposes.

You can have greasy hair in the form of overall oiliness, or you can have a type where the hair is only oily at the roots and scalp and dry everywhere else. This can often depend on genetics, but it can also be caused by poor cleansing habits or the wrong type of hair products. The latter is often characterized by a fairly normal scalp but oily hair, and most likely warrants a change in your hair care products or hair cleansing schedule. If cheap hair care products are causing you to have hair that is greasy, they are not a bargain!

Most experts agree that when you have chronically greasy hair, using a shampoo that is formulated for oily hair on a daily basis is a good idea. They caution, however, that over-washing could possibly cause the sebaceous glands to become even more overactive. Often it is just a matter of consulting with a professional, and trail and error. High quality shampoos and other hair care products can make a big difference too. If your problem seems serious, it could be a good idea to consult with a dermatologist or naturopathic physician, depending on your preference.
