Guide to Answering Machines
|
While this type of machine can still be purchased, there are both advantages and disadvantages to this model of answering machine. One of the major advantages to a tape answering machine is that if a consumer so desires they can retain messages left on their machine indefinitely. The disadvantage is that consumers who wish to do so will need to change out the cassettes in their machines periodically. Other disadvantages to a tape answering machine include the fact that it can be very difficult to navigate from one message to the next without a lot of rewinding and forwarding. Digital answering machines give you the option to skip, delete, fast forward or play back your messages. By and large the most popular type of answering machine available on the market today is the digital answering machine. This type of machine does not use cassette tapes at all; which makes them easier to use as well as less expensive to operate in the long run. Many of these machines will allow consumers to retain or delete messages as they wish. The disadvantage to this type of machine is that it may cut off lengthy messages after a preset amount of time. Another option in answering machines is the e-answering machine. This type of answering machine is available on software that is loaded onto the consumer's computer. When an in-coming call is detected, the e-answering machine picks up after a pre-determined number of rings; very similar to traditional answering machines. If a consumer has a microphone installed on their computer they can also use this type of answering machine software to speak to incoming callers directly on their computer as well as to record messages when they are not available to take the call. Many answering machines available on the market today also include other popular features such as caller I.D. With this type of answering machine, consumers no longer need to purchase a separate caller I.D. box in order to see immediately who has placed a call to their number; however they will need to subscribe to the service with their telephone company in order for this service to work. The price of answering machines vary; typically based on the type of machine that you purchase and the features that are included with that machine. Digital answering machines were some of the most expensive at one time; however, today they are much more widely available and the price has decreased dramatically. E-answering machines have also become much more affordable in the last few years. If you are interested in a machine with multiple mail boxes, you can expect to pay a slightly higher price. Depending on the model you purchase, you may be able to record and use multiple outgoing messages or one message that gives the caller the option of leaving a message for different parties by following the offered directions. Security codes can be used by individuals utilizing an answering machine with multiple mail boxes, in order to retrieve their personal incoming messages.
