Guide to Table Ware
|
Until you have entered a department store with the purpose of choosing an entire set of table ware, you may not be aware of just how many types and varieties of table ware are available. Tableware goes far beyond basic forks, knives and spoons. The most common way to obtain table ware is by place setting rather than piece. This means that it is far preferable to obtain an entire place setting of table ware than a dozen spoon, or forks, etc. A basic table setting for one consists of one large fork, one small fork, one large knife, one dessert spoon, one teaspoon and one butter knife. Depending on your preferences you may also wish to add a soup spoon to the table setting; although a dessert spoon can also serve as a soup soon when necessary. Keep in mind that a traditional teaspoon is not simply a spoon with a small bowl, but rather a long handled spoon that is idea for slipping into tall drinks, such as iced tea. If you live in a region where tall drinks are served frequently, this may be a necessity for your table setting. Depending on whether you plan to entertain frequently or not, you may wish to obtain a table ware setting that contains all the pieces for a formal table setting. A formal table setting consists of a butter knife, dinner fork, salad fork, dessert fork, knife, teaspoon and soup spoon. When planning for formal serving occasions, you may also wish to add the pieces necessary for formal serving table ware. Such a set would include at least three serving spoons, two serving forks and two sauce ladles. You might also wish to add after-dinner coffee spoons, additional teaspoons to serve condiments, oyster forks, fish forks, sugar tongs, a butter server, cake knife, pie server, steak knifes and ornamented spoons that are appropriate for serving jellies and jams. The number place settings that you purchase at the outset will greatly depend on your lifestyle. For example, if you plan to entertain frequently then you will need more pieces than if you do not plan to entertain or think that you will only be eating at home occasionally rather than every night. The basic minimum number of place settings acquired by most people is four; which allows for a host and hostess as well as two guests. Whether you choose to acquire a formal set of table ware and perhaps an every day set will also much depend on your lifestyle. Quality, silver table ware can be ideal for entertaining and special occasions. Many consumers feel that silver table ware is not convenient for the demands of everyday life due to the amount of maintenance and specialized care required to keep silver table ware looking its best and thus opt for a stainless steel set of table ware for everyday use. There are many stainless steel sets of tableware available in a wide variety of modern and classic patterns. Stainless steel works well for everyday use because it does not require any specialized care or storage and can simply be placed in the dishwasher along with other everyday dishes and serving pieces.
