HP C7973A LTO-3 Cartridge Secures Data For Longer Time Span
|
The third version of LTO cartridge manufactured by Hewlett-Packard is C7973A. The high capacity HP LTO 3 tape format features advanced servo based that has been specifically developed by Hewlett-Packard. This innovative technique assists in higher recording densities and also helps the HP LTO-3 tape format to read and write information to the prior tape versions of LTO. The backward compatibility of HP LTO-3 version secures the investment. Cartridge memory chip is an integral part of highly economical linear tape open format. RLL (run length limited) code used by the HP C7973A tape format is same as that used in LTO-2 tape format. On the other hand, RLL (1,8) code is used by the LTO-1 tape format for data recording. Superior data integrity and high output frequency in HP LTO-3 tape technology is assured by the advanced code error correction system known as “Reed Solomon block”. Read write head utilized in HP C7973A LTO-3 format comprises of sixteen channels. Both the previous generations LTO 2 and LTO-1 use 8 channel head. Exceptional data integrity and unmatched storage capacity are provided by HP C7973A tape cartridge. The tape head re-writes the defective parts of the tape media and reports error in case it fails to write information to a particular defected area. The reliable recording system of HP LTO-3 format records data at an exceptional speed of 160 Mbps (compressed). Tape reel of LTO-3 has been linearly divided into 7 areas. These areas are marked by 8 logical points. As the HP C7973A cartridge is loaded, the backup tape drive reads the LTO cartridge memory. The tape drive will load the media if it is compatible and will move to the beginning of user data region. When the tape passes the first divided area, it locks on servo-track. Then the tape heads will be aligned by the drive over the desired track area. In case the cartridge memory is defective, the tape drive writes the FID (format identification data set) on initial loading of the tape and then uses it as an alternative. The cartridge memory (CM) stores the tape length and the head position is determined by the differential reel speeds along the media tape. Servo system of HP LTO-3 backup tape format has the capability to accommodate the all the LTO first, second, third generations and the LTO-3 WORM media as well. This powerful feature makes HP LTO3 technology more reliable and advantageous. Timing based servo is an advantageous technology that controls the position of tape heads & tape speed, and provides continuous feedback thus ensuring increased performance. The flexible printed circuits carry the electrical signals while the servo head assembly resides on a carriage which is movable. A motor or actuator drives the carriage. In case there are no servo signals, the tape heads are kept on track by the help of the positional feedback provided by the inductance sensor. Long durable life of Hewlett-Packard C7973A tape cartridge protects the investments of the users and has the advanced features to backup massive data amounts at a rapid constant speed. HP LTO3 media technology consumes less energy and provides more flexibility to the data administrators.
