Harmful ingredients in makeup and skin care products!


It’s quite simple. There is no legal definition for words “natural” or “organic". What it actually means is a company may promote their products with these words, which means basically nothing, as the harmful ingredients in makeup and skincare products might still be there if you don’t know what you are looking for. So, just because a product contains the words "natural" or "organic" says nothing about whether the product contains ingredients which are harmful to you.

There are a few harmful ingredients in makeup and body care products which are more than sufficient cause for concerns. Some of them have been linked to cancer and many others need considerably more research. 1, 4-Dioxane is one of the chemicals "known to the State of California to cause cancer" under proposition 65. Most shockingly, you can find it in dozens of children’s bath products and adults’ personal care products.

Talc has been used commonly in cosmetics to dry, freshen and deodorise the skin. Over many years, research has suggested that women who use talcum powder for personal hygiene between their legs are more likely to get ovarian cancer. It is thought that talc may travel up into the vagina, through the cervix into the womb, along the fallopian tubes, to the ovaries, causing irritation and inflammation, resulting in cancerous changes.

Phthalates is a chemical used in soaps, shampoos, hair sprays and nail polish products. The health effects of phthalates in people are not yet fully known. Although several studies in people have explored possible associations with developmental and reproductive outcomes (semen quality, genital development in boys, shortened pregnancy and premature breast development in young girls).

Parabens are used to extend the shelf life of the make-up products. Parabens have been shown to be weak estrogen mimickers, binding to the cellular estrogen receptor. They also increase the expression of genes that are usually regulated by estradiol and cause human breast tumor cells to grow and proliferate in vitro.

Sodium lauryl sulphate commonly found in most shampoos and toothpastes, cleansing lotions, foaming bath oils, and liquid soaps. Alarmingly, studies have indicated that Sodium lauryl sulfate enters and maintains residual levels in the heart, the liver, the lungs and the brain from skin contact. This poses the question of it being a serious potential health threat to its use in shampoos, cleansers, and tooth pastes.

There are several harmful ingredients in makeup and skin care products. Only you can make sure you and your family is free any chemicals. There are plenty of products which are 100% natural and absolutely safe to use.
