Heavy Duty Power Tools

Heavy duty power tools are used when job being done is more than what your standard power tools can handle. Commonly this is when you are doing remodeling to an older structure made out of brick or concrete. With solid concrete floors, putting a new floor into an old elevator shaft can not be accomplished with a 3/8 inch variable speed drill. To drill the holes needed for the new piece of floorings support will take at least a 60 pound rotary impact drill. Breaking up that same flooring for an elevator shaft in a new location will take a 90 pound jack hammer. That will be after the floor has been cut with a diamond bladed concrete saw.

Those heavy duty power tools that are needed for one job now and then are usually rented. The cost of keeping one on hand for just the occasional job is beyond even most professional building contractors. Only the largest construction companies or those who regularly work with heavy materials can afford to keep them in stock. They can be rented for that one day project of putting a drain under your driveway at a reasonable rate.

Heavy duty power tools are used mostly for removal of material in a remodeling project. They are designed to have the power to damage strong long lasting material. They are also designed to do so in a precise controlled manner. As an example drilling holes in concrete to place bolts to attach something to the concrete. Or cutting a hole in a concrete wall to allow access to plumbing behind the wall. It does little good to cut a hole in a wall if the hole becomes many times the size that you planned on sealing up again afterwards. If you ever watch a worker cutting a hole in the street to work on city plumbing, you will notice that they start by using the jackhammer with a long flat blade to outline the area which is to be removed. Then they break up the material in the center so it can be removed.

With most power tools you want to maintain a strong hand and control the movement of the tool precisely to prevent it from jumping around and damaging the user. With heavy duty power tools, it is better to let the weight of the tools do most of the controlling and maintain a looser grip to just keep it from getting away from you. These tools are not for use by the unwary worker. If you can not pay close attention to how the tool is moving, then let someone else do the work. Dealing with heavy duty power tools is a tiring job and is one of the major causes of construction injuries. I can not stress enough that you need to be extra careful with heavy duty power tools.
