What companies do you trust, and why is it that you trust them?

I have several companies I've come to always trust with my business, and these companies are spread out over a very wide variety of stores.

Some are more obvious than others. When it comes to service industry jobs people are naturally going to need to have more trust in the people they're doing business with. I like to go to the same mechanic every time because I know I can trust them to do the best job possible and always fulfill my needs.

But I also go to the same grocery store because I know their prices are consistent and they always give me good service. Then there are the stores that are good to their loyal customers and provide additional discounts for those coming in on a regular basis.

Each place I trust gives me a different reason to, and when it comes to marketing, you have to decide exactly why a person is going to trust you if you want to sell to them.

Take the first example of the mechanic. What are some ways for him to develop a strong level of trust from people?

The first will technically work for any kind of business: testimonials. When it comes time to design some brochures and pay for the color printing you want to be sure first that you have some testimonials to put on your brochures. This is one of the best methods for letting people know you can be trusted. Hearing someone else who had a good experience does wonders to make me give a company a try.

But there are other ways as well. That mechanic could send out some postcards offering a free oil change for first time customers. The offer greatly increases the chances of getting people to come in, and once they see how good the service is they'll likely want to come back.

In regards to retail stores both big and small you might use good prices to initially get people into the store, and great service to get them coming back. Have postcards drawn up about an upcoming sale and send them out to all those future customers.

I'm sure you'll notice a trend with these suggestions. You need to first get people willing to give you a chance before you can hope to get them to trust you. Color printing alone will never gain a complete level of trust, but it does get people interested enough in you to actually come in and see what you're all about.

What this really boils down to is figuring out why your customers trust you and placing that into your advertising.
