Herpes is a common viral infection that causes painful blisters and sores on the genitals of countless men and women. This condition is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), and is a sexually transmitted disease that can be transmitted through actual sex and oral sex. Medical studies show that about one in five Americans over age 12 has genital herpes, and affected women outnumber men nearly three in two. The herpes virus stays with individuals who have acquired it and there is a possibility that this condition will reoccur from time to time. In general, herpes symptoms develop within two to 20 days of infection. Flu-like symptoms like fever, headache, swollen lymph glands, and muscle aches may be experienced during the first attack. It may also be accompanied by pain, burning, or tingling around your genitals, thighs, or buttocks, where sores and blisters may eventually appear. Small red bumps may also emerge and turn into fluid-filled blisters and break open into shallow pinkish sores that can be very tender and painful. The herpes infection is known to reappear even after the active infection is eliminated. In rare cases, pregnant women can pass this infection to their infants. Treatment for the herpes virus will depend on the strain and stage of the virus. Some treatment with antiviral drugs can aid people who have contacted genital herpes outbreaks remain symptom-free for a longer time. There is no known treatment that can cure genital herpes; the virus will always be present in the body. It cannot be cured, but with the help some drugs available today, the duration and severity of the outbreaks can be controlled and shortened. A drug that has gained the approval of doctors is Acyclovir, a drug that belongs to the family of medicines called antivirals. These medicines usually work only one kind or group of viral infection. Acyclovir can also be used to treat chickenpox, shingles, herpes infection of the lips and mouth, and many more. It is also used to prevent recurrent genital herpes infections. This will not cure herpes but will only relieve the pain and discomfort and helps the sores heal faster. Acyclovir may also be used for other virus infections as determined by your doctor. However, just like other forms of medication, this drug should never be used without the approval of doctors. This is essential in preventing the development of drug interactions and other side effects that can be experienced with this drug. Aside from antiviral drugs, there are also several home remedies, herbs and prescription drugs to help relieve the sores and control the infection. When sores are present, it is always important to maintain proper hygiene and keep the area clean and dry. The immune system should be boosted with vitamins and other supplements and stress must be kept at a minimum. Individuals with herpes do not mean the end of their sex lives; it simply means one has to be careful with sex and relationships. Health professionals advice individuals with herpes to be honest with their partners and openly discuss the issue.
