High Protein Snacks - What Can You Treat Yourself To?

If you are on a low carbohydrate diet then you may be wondering what types of high protein snacks are available. Actually there are a lot of high protein snacks that you can treat yourself to. Some of these snacks are prepackaged as protein rich snacks while other you will need to prepare yourself.

The first type of high protein snacks that you can munch on if you are on a low carbohydrate diet are low carb protein bars. If you are on a low carb diet you will want to make sure that you read the label of the bar to make sure that it is a low carb, or a zero carb bar because many protein bars actually contain a lot of carbohydrates. If you are not on a low carb diet, and you are just looking for a high protein snack then you don't have to worry about the carb count, and you can select from any of the protein bars on the market.

The second types of snacks high in protein that you can have as a snack are protein shakes. Protein shakes are a quick snack option that can be bought pre-mixed, or in powder form. There are many different protein shake mixes on the market, and there are many different protein sources that are utilized. If you are a vegetarian then you will want to look for a protein shake that is made from soy protein, hemp protein, or rice protein. If you are not a vegetarian then you can select from any protein source including the vegetarian sources as well as whey protein and egg protein.

The next group of high protein snacks that you can eat is beef sticks. Beef sticks include a variety of flavors including smoked, spicy, and pepperoni. You will want to read the ingredient list and nutrition information carefully to make sure that the product doesn't contain anything that is restricted by your current diet. For example if you are on a low carbohydrate diet you will not be able to eat a beef stick that has been cured in a sugar like honey.

Cheese is another great snack high in protein that you can eat. If you are concerned about your cholesterol or fat intake then you can select from low fat cheeses like part skim milk mozzarella. String cheese is another great snack option as it comes in individual serving packaging, which eliminates the need to measure out a proper portion.

Your final high protein snack option are nuts. Sunflower seed, peanuts, almonds, and soy nuts are all healthy protein snacks that are available throughout the year. Nuts provide a great source of protein as well as other highly beneficial nutrients. Almonds and soy nuts are especially good snacking options. There are a few warnings that you will need to keep in mind when snacking on nuts. First if you have a food allergy to nuts then you will not want to select nuts as a snacking option. Secondly if you are trying to limit the amount of sodium in your diet you will want to look for unsalted nuts.
