High White Blood Count: What Does It Mean?
|
Such tests are intended to discover any problems with infections in the body, or signs of anemia or leukemia, or to supervise the results of chemotherapy or radiation therapy. In the blood, the role of white blood cells, or leukocytes, is to ensure the immunity of the body against infections. When they fight against infections, they round up around the foreign organism and devour it. Their role in the immune system is determined by their ability to carry antibodies all throughout the body. White blood cells are produced by the marrow of the bones and their number increases when there is an infection in the body. Under these circumstances, anyone can say that a high white blood count is a good thing, but this is not always the case. A huge number of white cells can be the sign of a serious health issue. Usually, the numbers of white blood cell count must range in 4,500 - 10,000 per micro liter. There is not only one type of white blood cells, and they are categorized like this: neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and the basophils. Here are the numbers for a perfectly healthy individual (per micro liter):- neutrophils: 3150 - 6200- lymphocytes: 1500 - 3000- monocytes: 300 - 500- eosinophils: 50 - 250- basophils: 15 - 50 These numbers serve to indicate if the body is ill. A body with a high count of lymphocytes is a sign of AIDS, a number that outranges the normal values for neutrophil count is a sign of infection and too many monocytes and eosinophils represent the sign of a bacterial infection. Many times, too many white blood cells indicate infection, a trauma, tissue damage, a bone marrow disease, leukemia. But they could increase their number during intense exercise, or during stress, or because we use certain medicines, like corticosteroids, antibiotics, or drugs for seizure patients. As mentioned before, increased white blood cell count can be only natural. It can happen during the final month of pregnancy, or in new born babies. Also, an increased white cell blood count can appear in smokers. During the day, the number can modify, with more white blood cells in the late afternoon, and less in the morning. But, when these numbers tend to modify too often, without any apparent reasons, then it is the time to address the problem with a doctor, in order to take some tests. This is the only solution to discover what it is happening. When the doctor advises it, you must run a blood test and count your white blood cells. These tests are not expensive and they can help you identify some serious problems in early stages, which will allow for easy cure.
