Highlighted hair is very popular these days and it is a great look. But, if you do not want to spend time and money at the beauty parlor, you can do it at home, with your own hands and skills.

If you have short hair, the process is easy. You will just need a cap, a hook and a brush. If you have long hair, you may want to consider buying a highlighting kit to help you.

The first decision is picking the color for the highlights. Choose some tones that are slightly lighter than your natural hair. For instance, you can have dark blonde or brown, or even caramel brown for black hair, as these highlights will enrich your natural color.

Here is a tip: use this process when the hair is dried, as its natural oil will protect it from the action of chemicals.

Dress with a long sleeve shirt and put a towel around the shoulders, as you will need protection. Gloves are also required, and, if your skin becomes tinted in some areas, wash it right away.

The colors in hair dyes can be very powerful and hard to take out from carpets or other furniture. Do this in the bathroom or in the kitchen to limit the side effects.

Always read the label and the instructions on the kit.

Here is how you can highlight your hair with the cap technique. You just need to place the cap on your head and then pull strands of hair through the cap, with the hook. To avoid a spotty look, do not pull hair from the areas where it is too short.

For the other technique, you need to visualize where you want the highlights to appear. It is best to opt for the areas that surround your face. Now, you will need to make the mixture for the highlights. Remember to follow the instructions.

For the short hair method, you will just need to apply the dye on the cap, until the strands are covered very well.

With a brush, take enough mixture and apply it on each strand that you want to get highlighted. Well coated hair will return the best results.

While doing this, check from time to time to see if you like the color or the tint your hair becomes. When they seem to be too light, just take off the excess of dye with a corner of the towel. Also, to avoid a stronger effect, rinse the hair earlier.

In the end, you will need to rinse well the hair, to avoid excess stuck into your hair. A conditioner can help your hair regain its moisture right away.

When you wear highlights in your hair, it is the same as with having dyed hair. You will need to use some special shampoo for color treated hair and a conditioner to restore the moisture and the natural oil of the hair after you wash it. Too much exposure to the sun can tamper with the result of your highlights. Make sure to renew them from time to time, or protect your hair when you go outside.
