Hockey leagues are set up everywhere for anyone that wants to participate in this great sport. Thee are lots of league everywhere, it has no longer become just a Canadian sport but rather adopted by many nations as well now. Children as young as 4 could easily participate in leagues or just beginning programs to help them develop the skills that will be required later for more competitive play. Hockey was once a very male dominant sport but is having more and more female participants as the years passes by. Any one that is interested at all in hockey and is able to play should try it out. One of the basic skills that are required from all hockey players is to skate. If you do not know how to skate on ice then you are better off taking up some skating lessons first before joining a league. As players in leagues usually do possess the skills to skate, and will leave you behind in the ice shaving if you are not able to move. No matter how good your slap shot is it is useless if you can’t get to the spot to put it to use. But most youth leagues will have practices that will help players built their hockey skills. And nothing teaches better than experience, and with these youth leagues players are expose to competition early allowing them to become better players as they grow. There are different hockey leagues for different types of players. As young players grow up they will be given more chances to join in different leagues, such as house league or contact leagues. It depends on the player if he wants to play at a higher level and play a more physical game. Sometimes kids are forced to play at a high level league even though they are not capable and are not interested in taking the next step. This will just cause the kid to feel bad when he or she is not able to keep up with the other kids that are playing in that hockey league. As lots of hockey leagues are not telling parents that hockey is just a game and to not take it so serious and put so much pressure on their kids. Body checking in a hockey league for young players is a hot topic on hockey currently. Because body checking does not only have the potential of causing harm to the person getting checked but the one doing the checking as well. This is because most times kids are not taught the proper method of hockey body checking yet. Currently some say by allowing kids to body check at a young age before puberty it will be safer since they will not be throwing their bodies immaturely. If we introduce kids to body checking during puberty they may not know what their bodies are capable of doing since their bodies is in a state of change currently. This is actually more dangerous because of that. But it has been flipped around as well to help support the other side of the argument. Still the answer to the question of when body checking should be introduced as part of the sport of hockey to the young ones is still up in the air. For young players starting out in the game of hockey, it is important for them to learn to play fair. If they do consider keeping playing hockey in the future then the rules they learn to play fair in the past will carry on into the future. Making sure the hockey leagues adopt a sportsmanlike approach to everything is very important in helping young players develop their hockey careers. Make sure the hockey leagues that you have your kids participate in do not emphasis too much on winning over the actual social interaction and experience that they gain. Hockey should always be played with a light heart, not putting too much pressure on yourself or others because of it. Hockey should always have safety in mind first. As the game is very fast and physical, emotions can sometimes get the best of even the best players. It is always important for you and others to know that it is only a game and that there is life outside of the hockey rink. To maintain a safe environment for a good hockey game to occur, players should have the proper equipment to avoid injuries, and also for the coaches and officials to keep the game clean and safe. On top of that it is up to the players to learn the rules of the game and show good sportsmanlike conduct.
