Holly Bushes - Tips for Pruning One
|
Tip #1 - Do the Pruning in the Winter - First of all, if you are going to prune your holly bushes, you need to make sure that you do it during the winter. In fact, one of the best times to do this is in the month of December. The great thing is, you will be able to take the cuttings and use them around your home for decorations. Also, this is the best time for the tree to be pruned as well. Tip #2 - Don't Over Shape - While you will want to do a bit of shaping, you don't want to over shape the holly bushes too much. After all, these bushes are not like boxed hedging or other types of bushes that are easily shape. So, avoid trying to shape too much, but when you are pruning them, you should stick to the natural way that the bush is actually shaped. Tip #3 - Begin Inside the Bush - Another important tip to remember is to make sure that you begin inside the bush when you are pruning the holly bushes. If there are branches that are dead or that look that they have a problem, then make sure that you trim them off. When you are trimming, trim right above where the new buds are. Don't be afraid of cutting to much. Thinning it out good is important so that it will come back more beautiful in the next few years. Tip #4 - Don't Use Hedge Trimmers - While you may be tempted to use hedge trimmers on your holly bushes, it's probably not a great idea. It takes the ends off the leaves and branches and gives the bush a more boxy look that doesn't look great. It also won't help your holly to grow back looking better either. Tip #5 - Get Rid of Trimmings - After you actually trim the holly bushes, you should remove everything that you have trimmed off. Some can be used as decorations, but all the rest should be disposed of. If they have disease on them, make sure that you keep them far away from the bushes. About The Author: |
