Homemade Lawn Fertilizer

Whether you have concerns about using certain chemicals, are trying to be environmentally friendly, are cautious because you have kids or dogs, or you just prefer an organic product over a manufactured fertilizer there are some excellent homemade lawn fertilizer recipes that can be found online. Here is just a sampling.

1. Recipe #1Use a tea fertilizer. Put five quarts of manure on a 3 foot square of burlap that will work as a strainer separating solids from liquids. Tie the four corners of the burlap together to form a bag and then put the bag in a 5-gallon bucket. Add three gallons of warm water and let steep in the sun for one week. It should be about the color of tea you would drink. Remove the bag and suspend it above the bucket. When it stops dripping you are ready to use it. Remember this is concentrated so you will need one cup of solution to one gallon of water. Use it on your lawn or your plants.

2. Recipe #2Mix 16 tablespoons of Epsom salts with 8 ounces of household ammonia and then water. Evenly spray across your lawn.

3. Recipe #3Mix 3 cups of water, 1 cups of cheap beer, 1 cup Epson salts, and 1 cup ammonia. Mix it all up in a container and once well mixed you can pour it into your watering can and distribute it just like you were watering your lawn. Anything that's left over just store in a sealed container until next use. Reapply roughly every 4 to 6 weeks.

4. Recipe #4Mix one can of non diet pop, on can of cheap bear, cup of ammonia, cup of liquid dishwashing soap but no antibacterial soap, and cup mouthwash. Then mix it all together and pour it into your hose fertilizer sprayer. The pop and beer feed the lawn and the ammonia helps promote growth while the dishwasher soap works as a wetting agent that helps the water get to the roots and lastly the mouthwash kills bugs. Ammonia can kill the grass if too much is used. This mix should only be used in really warm temperatures and it can be reapplied every 4 weeks.

5. Recipe #5Mix one can of coke, one can of beer, one cup apple juice, one cup lemon scented dishwashing liquid, one cup ammonia, and one cup all purpose plant food. Mix in a large bucket then pour one quart of the mix into a 20 gallon hose end sprayer. The results will be amazing.

6. Recipe #6Mix one can of beer, one can of pepsi, 1 cup ammonia, and 1 cup of Epsom salts which will help aerate the ground and allow it to breathe better. The ammonia will kill any bacteria and fungus found in the ground.

7. Recipe #71 can Campbell's Tomato Juice, 1/2 cup fabric Downy softener, -2 cups water, 2/3 cup orange juice.

Remember when you are working with ammonia you need to make sure you do not inhale any fumes. In fact you really should wear a mask.

Here are some tips to help you get that great looking lawn without the use of harsh chemicals.1. Remember to go back to basics by practicing organic gardening. For example if you want to get rid of dandelions rather than using harsh chemicals pouring boiling water on them is as simple as it gets.2. Check your garden center shelves for organic product. Many are now stocking a great selection of organic so if you don't feel like making up your own brew you've got lots of options.3. Watch the price. Organic choices can cost more than double what the conventional chemical options cost. For example a gallon of household ammonia can be purchased for pennies and give you the same nitrogen punch as a marketed product but for a fraction of the cost.

Isn't it time we all started to pay more attention to what we put on our lawns and in our gardens and homemade lawn fertilizer is a great place to start.
