They can relieve themselves an average of six times a day, and you certainly don't want it all over your home. The bladder of a puppy is very weak and small when they are little, so you need to understand accidents are going to happen. About the time your puppy is 12 weeks of age he or she will be better able to control the muscles in the bladder. Observation is key when housebreaking dog because most of them will show signs of needing the bathroom. For example turning in circles or returning to a location where they like to use the bathroom should encourage you to take immediate action. Immediately take your puppy outside when it is showing such signs or it begins to use the bathroom indoors. When you work on how to housebreak a puppy they need to be able to make the connection of when you are taking them outside. In the mean time you need to do what you can to protect your home. Have liners in place or use a method of training where they are confined to one area. Make sure you clean up any accidents very well because a dog will continue to use the bathroom where it can smell the scent of doing it before. When it comes to housebreaking a dog, you will find there are quite a few different methods you can incorporate. Decide which one you want to use, what it entails, and then be consistent. It is unreasonable to expect your puppy to learn what you expect if the routine isn't followed religiously. You need to reinforce the rules as soon as the activity is taking place. If you allow even a few minutes to pass then they won't get the connection and only be confused. This can be a great method but make sure your puppy isn't spending too much of its time in there. A puppy needs to be out for walks and for fresh air during the day. If you must leave your puppy home all day use a baby gate to section of an area so they do have room to play. Put down newspaper or puppy pads for them to use the bathroom on. Make sure they have plenty of food and fresh water for the day as well. Housebreaking dog will take a few weeks of consistency for it to really fall into place. The effort you put into it from the very start though is going to determine how well your dog does with it. You certainly don't want to be dealing with messes six months or a year from now. Give your dog plenty of time to complete their business when you take them outside. They need to understand that time isn't for fun and games though so don't play with them when you take them out for such activities. If you want your puppy to use the bathroom in the same location outdoors all the time, take them to that spot as soon as you go out. Give your puppy plenty of praise when they do a great job and that will help speed up the housebreaking process as well.
