How A Purple Heart Medal Honors Military Troops

Each days thousands of military troops place their lives on the line to protect their country. Unfortunately many men and women serving in the military have been injured or killed while on duty. Deceased or wounded military troops are not forgotten after their incident, but they are honored with a purple heart.

A purple heart is a military award that is given who military troops who were killed or wounded while actively participating in the military. The United States had developed a set of qualifications that a member of the military must qualify for before being honored with a purple heart.

Some of the standard qualifications for receiving a purple heart medal many include, but are not limited to, injury or death due to gunfire, chemical agents, and explosions caused by an enemy of the United States. If a solider was injured by a roadside bomb or mine trap that was set by terrorists or rebels they are likely to qualify for a purple heart.

In addition to a few of the above mentioned requirements there are a few circumstances that may eliminate a soldier from being awarded a purple heart medal. Soldiers who fail to protect themselves or act in the best interest of their fellow troops or themselves run the risk of becoming ineligible for receiving the medal. Individuals who develop a mental or physical disability after they have already left active military duty are also ineligible to receiving a purple heart.

Soldiers who have been killed or injured in the line of duty are typically nominated for the purple heart by a commanding officer in their troop. Once a designated committee has approved a request for a purple heart the solider or their family will be given the award.

Individuals who were seriously injured in combat are likely to be presented with their own award during a ceremony. When the purple heart is being awarded to a solider who died in combat the purple heart is typically given to their next of kin or presented to other family members. Each branch of the military has the ability to present the purple heart anyway that it sees fit.

Receiving a purple heart military medal is a great honor for soldiers who may have lost their lives or were seriously injured. Many disabled soldiers are unable to return to combat duty after their incident. Not being able to return to active duty is something that hits many individuals hard; therefore, a purple heart medal often ends up holding a special place in their heart.

As serious and as tragic as an injury may be there is nothing more painful then a person losing their spouse, parents, or children due to combat. A medal will never be able to replace the life of a loved one; however, many families use the purple heart as a remembrance that their spouse, parent, or child lost their life protecting the country that they grew up to love and respect.
