How About That Barcelona Chair?

Youre looking for a great chair to make a statement in your room. Youve spent a great deal of money on the d飯r and in making it the perfect room and all it needs is the perfect chair. How about that Barcelona chair?

Have you ever wondered how a simple lounge chair has grown to be so famous? How a design from so long ago has made it as a modern design classic that is in demand around the globe?

It all started back in 1929 when a man by the name of Ludwig Mies Van de Rohe became a leading architect of his time serving as the director of the Bauhaus the renowned German school of design. He understood how important it was to have the correct furniture in the room to give the room its atmosphere.

The 1929 Barcelona World Arts Fair contracted Mies to do the German Pavilion designs for the exposition. He designed the building and then moved onto the furniture and thus this chair design was born.

You might be surprised to discover that designing a chair is actually the hardest piece of furniture to design. Its actually easier to design a building. Mies knew that the chair he designed for the pavilion had to be throne like.

These chairs were an instant hit and quickly became status symbols for the rich and famous including kings and queens. The design was ageless and sales continued to climb.

In 1950 Mies gave the chair a quick facelift incorporating stainless steel into the design. Stainless which was no readily available would allow for the entire frame to be made from one piece of metal.

Chair prices range from $500 to $5000 depending on the year of the chair, the finish, the upholstery, and whether you choose the matching sofas that are available.

Today the Barcelona remains as popular as ever and with modern day architecture and d飯r its a perfect fit and worth every penny. The taut cowhide straps support the cushions and the steel frame is hand polished to a mirror like finish. The deep precise tufts and individual panels make this chair as unique as it was the day it came into being way back in the 20s.

Why not add a touch of Spain to your room with a Barcelona chair?
