How Do Air Compressors Work

Compressed air is not new. In fact it is actually an alternative form of energy. It's also safe and easy to use which is why compressors are so popular. So how do air compressors work?

The compressor is simply a type of machine that compresses the air by increasing pressure and decreasing volume. It uses an electric motor to run a pump that compresses the air. The air is created by the use of a piston and the air flowing through a directional valve where is either stored in a tank or immediately used to power an air tool.

An on/off switch controls whether the compressor is running or not. When it is on it automatically produces air. If the tank is low it will continue to produce but it will also stop producing air when the tank is full. This is the job of the regulator. The gauge will allow you to see what the pressure in the tank is.

For your compressor to continue producing air properly you need to follow these simple start up and maintenance procedures.

1. Make sure the compressor is in the off position.2. First connect the hose to the air outlet on the compressor. Make sure the coupling is nice and snug. They often ship with them loose.3. Now grab the hose and connect your air tool that you want to use to the other end.4. No plug your compressor in and switch it on. You're ready to get busy.5. You can use the regulator to adjust the air flow to the required flow for the tool you are using.6. When you are done shut the compressor off.7. If you are going to do another job you need to let the compressor sit for about a half a minute before you turn it back on.8. When you are done for the day unplug it from the wall.9. There is a built in safety that automatically cuts the power to the compressor if it overheats. Once the motor haws cooled down you will be able to start it again.10. If you are storing your compressor drain all the air from the tank. If you don't you'll develop a water problem in your tank because compressed air forms condensed water.11. Simply follow your manuals instructions for maintenance and storage. Most compressors require only minimal maintenance.12. Store in a dry place and make sure it is unplugged from the wall.

That's it. Not too complicated at all now is it? Air tools are affordable and their life expectancy is generally longer than electric tools. Air compressors are also affordable and with so many options you can get one in what ever size or style that you need.

Online is a great place to shop for some terrific tool and equipment bargains for both air and non air tools. So now that you have had your question how do air compressors work? answered why not grab a chair, bring along your java and start shopping for the right compressor for you?
