New York Giants Wins Super Bowl XLII 2008 Title “Its one of those things where they have a great front seven,” center Dan Koppen said. “They have tremendous players up there and they just outplayed us.” That was the exact mode of play of the just ended Super Bowl Sunday in Arizona on the 3rd of February. The climax of the XL-II super Bowl wasn’t until the last minute when Eli Manning converted a touch down seconds to time up. The New England Patriot’s big, unshaved and tough acting guys just couldn’t hold back the seething and relentless New York Giants. They just kept battering the defense line of the Pats until it started to give-bit by bit. N.E. patriots had had an almost perfect season with no losses up until the Super Bowl. They were the AFC football champions with a renowned offensive line. The defense however failed to hold back the Giants and allowed a season’s record five sacks to the New York Giants. Even their usually tight condone around Tom Brady was not seen at this Super Bowl unlike their other matches in the NFL 2007 season. The N.E. Patriot’s failure to protect their prize scorer Brady is what contributed to the Patriot’s humiliating 17-14 loss and a record in Super Bowl’s history. The MVP of New England Patriots 2007, Brady has had a rough season with a record 24 sacks. His protection was star studded with guys like pro bowlers Koppen, left tackle Matt Light and Logan Makins on left guard. As if that wasn’t enough he also was covered by right guard Stephen Neal and right tackles Nick Kaczur. No wonder Brady had a no hassle season and proceeded to make record braking scores without the threat of overzealous and murderous defense lines. Even Brady was at loss, after their defeat to the Giants; what with his usually water tight protection having been broken down by the relentless New York Giants. He commented, “They have some great pressure schemes, obviously some great pass rushers,” Brady said. “Once we kind of got the idea of what we were doing, I thought we handled it much better, but we didn’t get the ball in the end zone enough.” A few days earlier and before the super bowl, Brady had commented; “I like when I don’t get touched,” Brady had said. Not only did the New England lack a solution to the Giant’s unbending defense line, but they couldn’t hold back the storming, furry-filled and solid mass defensive attack of the giants. Brady had never before been sacked as more as five times as he did during the pats vs. Giants game on Sunday. Not since the New York Jets episode on Sept. 21, 2003. Brady had sensed a hard game ahead when he was first sacked by Kawika Mitchell and Justin Tuck on 2 plays back to back in the second quarter. He was kept in check and could hardly find Randy Moss and his other team members as he usually does with such precision he has made a name for himself. Neal’s departure after Tuck was sacked aggravated things as he never returned to play again. The New England offensive line was a scared lot and light had to be called back for false starts on several drives in the third quarter. The giants had noticed this and capitalized on it fully. Brady was particularly angry.” He was an upset guy,” Giants line backer Antonio Pierce mentioned of Brady. “He was yelling at his line men. I think that worked in our favor.” Even with 19 seconds to the end, Brady was sacked again for the last time by Jay Alford who pulled him down at NE’s 16-yard line. He could only manage two desperate attempts to pass to moss that never worked anyway. “I think the intensity from the beginning snap to the end of the game was really higher than ours,” Moss said. “We just couldn’t meet that intensity.” All in all, the Patriots managed to achieve NFL records for point scored and total touch downs. Brady outdid himself by breaking the league mark for TD passes. Moss also set his own record on receptions on scoring. All that record shattering potential was brought grinding to a halt at the super bowl proper with a super Bowl seasons lowest score of 14. The Patriot’s coach Bill Belichick said of the New York Giants Team, “They played well defensively,” Bill said. “They’ve been able to rush. They lead the league in sacks, they rushed all year. They are a good defensive football team. They played well.” Even Brady thought that they could have done better in the super bowl. It’s reasonable to say that they got a little overconfident and didn’t think much of the “minnows” –the Giants. After all, the patriots had all the NFL season’s records and the AFC championship to boot. Even Brady conceded. "We all could've done things better tonight.
