The conversion process is fairly straight forward. 1. Walls The walls will have to have the proper insulation and vapor barrier installed with a minimum R11 on the interior walls and R19 on the exterior walls. 2. Floor You will need concrete floors and they will need to be sealed with a vapor barrier of R19. 3. Ceiling The ceiling requires an insulation rating of R19 4. Vapor Barrier Use 6 mil polyethylene plastic sheeting for the vapor barrier and it needs to be on the warm side. If you are doing a room conversion. 1. Seal the concrete floor with a water base sealant. 2. Install vapor barrier on the ceilings and walls 3. Fur out the walls using 2"x4" strips. You'll need 2"x4" strips in order to get the required insulation factores. 4. You will need a solid core door and if you have a glass door it will have to be dual paned. Same with any windows. The door will have to be weather stripped and you need to check to make sure it is air tight. 5. You will also need to check windows, switches, vents, and pipes to make sure they are air tight. 6. Drywall is the preferred wall surface. Wood is a poor choice because it tend to form mildew and rot when cool and humid. Any paints you use need to be water proof. 7. Remember your refrigeration will be sized by the room volume. Width x Depth x Height will give you your cubic area. 8. Choose racks that you can add onto over time. There are plenty of these systems available online and they are very affordable. Now that you know how to build your own wine cellar what are you waiting for? This is a project that's going to reward you for years to come. Soon you'll be able to start building that terrific wine collection.
