How To: Have a Great Check-Out Experience

In today's fast-paced service industry it can be tough to find good customer service. Workers are unqualified, underpaid and inattentive. So how can you make it through the check-out without a rise in blood pressure, or maybe even win one of those elusive cashier smiles? It's not all about what the person behind the counter is doing. Some resposbility falls on you, the customer, to make it a quick, easy and enjoyable experience. Your cashier is fighting a disheartening battle to maintain interest as one disorganized, confused patron after another makes the same small mistakes. If you can offer them a break from the stress they will more often than not repay you by going above and beyond what has become their usual habit.

1. It's been said a thousand times before that first impressions are important. Smile at your cashier and say hello. If they see that you are happy and relaxed they are more likely to behave the same. The opposite is also true. If you act as if you're stressed they will take on your negativity. Make them laugh if at all possible. If you cheer them up they'll be more likely to remember you and help you next time you come in.

2. Don't talk on your phone during check-out. A person talking on a cell phone instead of taking active interest in what's happening should not expect to get attention from their cashier. If you have to take the call, apologize. Your call is slowing down the process and showing immense disrespect. Often it's also angering the people in line behind you. For the same reasons.

3. Have your purchase ready when you reach the register. This isn't the time to deliberate between items or run back for things. A few questions are to be expected but keep them brief or let them call someone else to help you if there's a line. If you know you don't want something put it back in it's place before you get to the register if you can. If you can't remember where you got it, give it to them instead of leaving it around the register area.

4. Pick how you will pay and have it easily accessable before you need to pay. Cash or credit/bank cards are the fastest and easiest choices. Keep all cards and cash organized so you can get them out as your purchases are being scanned. If you have to pay by check get out your checkbook and driver's license or ID and ask what you can fill out beforehand.

5. When your transaction is complete, step aside so the next customer can be seen. Don't stand in the way to check your receipt and put everything back in your purse or wallet. If there is a problem it will be taken care of more graciously if you haven't irritated everyone by stopping traffic.

If you take a few small steps to make the world more pleasant you will live in a more pleasant world.
