How To Keep Your Wooden Floor Looking Its Best

Wooden Floors add so much to a property. They make a house cleaner, more hygienic and easier to live in for allergy sufferers. They also add character and finesse to a property but how do you maintain a wooden floor to keep it at its optimum condition? We all have little accidents when we spill a glass of juice or someone drops some oil but what is the best way to remove these things from your wooden floor? This article discusses how to maintain your wooden floor and gives you some hints and tips on how to remove some of those tougher stains that might find their way onto the floor.

To keep your floor at tip top condition you should keep it clean with a wax duster or a mop with a sponge pad and a small amount of cleaner. The duster is a straight forward way of cleaning but the mop may need a little explanation. Using a mop on a wooden floor is great to get rid of some of the dirt and dust but remember to never get it too wet. Squeeze out the mop well before you start the job and do not allow water to soak into the floor. This is because your floor is made of wood which can expand if it gets wet and that could leave you with a completely clean but uneven floor.

If your wooden floor gets any really stubborn marks on it use a cloth and floor cleaner to rub them off. For certain types of stains you may find it useful to use other household products to remove them. For instance water and a mop will remove most food and drink stains but if you are trying to get rid of chocolate or grease from your floor you may find you need to resort to a cloth and a little white spirit. Methylated spirit on a cloth will remove shoe polish and asphalt. And should you have a worse kind of accident and get the floor covered in blood cold water and a cloth should take it out of the wooden floor (remember not to soak the floor in water though)

Many manufacturers recommend using floor refresher after cleaning to keep your wooden floor at its optimum.

If you have an oiled wooden floor it is the manufacturer’s guidance that you will need to take into account when cleaning – Often it is recommended that you give the floor a re-oil about 10 days after installation. This allows any expansion / contraction as the wood settles into your rooms ambient temperature /humidity levels.

As with other wooden floors it is good to sweep or hoover the floor on a regular basis.
