How To Make A Denim Purse: Materials Explained

Making a denim purse is a rewarding endeavor that can be easily accomplished by anyone wanting to take the time to do some research and have a whole lot of fun. Making a denim purse is a wonderful rainy day afternoon project for a mother, a daughter, or both together. The materials are easily gotten around the home; any pieces needing purchased separately are relatively inexpensive and can be picked up at a local secondhand store or thrift shop. When you want to know how to make a denim purse, one important issue that is not usually discussed enough is the material needed.

Materials Needed - Sewing Machine, Denim Sewing Needle, Needle, Yellow Denim Thread, Fabric Glue, Pattern, Zipper or Closure, Denim, and Embellishments

Sewing Machine - Most modern sewing machine will fit this requirement. However, many of the older sewing machine can not sew denim that is think. Check your sewing machine manual if you are unsure.

Denim Sewing Needle - Denim is very thick and course. The normal sewing machine needle will not be able to stitch the denim together properly. This can cause damage to not only the fabric but also the sewing machine. I suggest using a needle between the sizes of 10/70 and 18/110. The needle will properly stitch the heavy pieces of denim together. In addition, these needles will save your sewing machine the extra effort that could cause your sewing machine to breakdown.

Needle - A #16 tapestry needle is perfect for denim. The larger the number on the needle, the larger the eye of the needle and the thicker the material it will puncture. If you choose a lower number, I do not suggest going below a #12 needle.

Yellow Denim Thread - This type of thread was specially made for denim. In addition, the yellow thread matches just about any denim and enhances the appearance. Not bad for a little bit of thread.

Fabric Glue - This is essential for almost any crafting project and is invaluable. You should always join seams with a fabric glue before you sit down at the sewing machine. This step actually helps make the whole project take less time and the denim purse last longer. Once the fabric glue has dried the seams and hems in place, then you can sew as the pattern specifies.

Pattern - A pattern is important at this point. I like browsing the Internet to find a pattern I like. Then I read the whole pattern. Do I have all of the materials needed? Do I understand all of the directions? Do I like the pattern? If you answered no to any of those it may serve you well to find a different pattern. Once you find a pattern you enjoy, print it off and make sure all of it is there.

Zipper or Closure - If you are going to use a zipper you should get one that is long. You can always cut it shorter but it will not miraculously get longer. If you do not want a zipper, you can use buttons or lace. You choose what is best for you and what you have handy.

Denim - This is probably obvious. You are here to learn how to make a denim purse, you need denim. I like to cut old pieces of denim into odd shaped pieces then sew them together with the yellow denim thread. This gives a kind of quilted patchwork pattern to the denim. If you find you are a bit low on denim, hop down to the thrift store.

Embellishments - This can be anything you want and have laying around. Extra lace, buttons, metal doodads, and metal clippy things. Whatever you want to call them, they are embellishments. Of course, my favorite is appliques.

Now that you have all the materials together and have a basic idea of what is expected, sit back and enjoy. Before tomorrow, you will have an awesome denim purse for your wardrobe. In less than a weekend you can have something that will last you a lifetime. Just be sure that you read everything first; that you have all of the materials; that you understand what you will have to do. It does no good to try to make a denim purse that takes a specific stitch on a specific sewing machine if you do not know how to replace that stitch or have that sewing machine. Have fun!
