How To Make A Voodoo Doll: Cast Your Spell
|
For your New Orleans voodoo doll, take two sticks and tie them together with a string so they form a cross. Use some hemp cord, or some waxed thread, as these materials work best as a string. Afterwards, take some Spanish moss and gather it around the sticks. A good idea is to start from the center and then go on each arm of the cross, for a more durable doll. If you want to add something to the doll's firmness, try to use a single piece of moss for the entire cross, but, if that is not possible and the moss breaks, just tie it up with some string, so it does not disintegrate later. Now, use the fabric strips to tie them well around the moss. Leave a little of the moss getting out for the hair, the arms, and the bottom. Use tacky glue, so the fabric remains stuck to the cross. If you feel that it is needed, secure the final arrangement with stitches and needles. For the face of your doll, some beads for the eyes, or two black eyed peas, are ok. A button will do for the mouth. The final touch is given by dressing up the doll. To get a better idea about who the doll represents, you may want to use some clothes like pieces of fabric so the doll resembles a real individual. Adding accessories like a mojo pouch or a gris gris bag is a good idea. In order to personalize your doll, adding a little hair from the person you want the doll to represent, or a personal object, is what you have to do. For a modern voodoo doll, you will need a photo of the person you want the doll to impersonate. Cut around the person's profile, leaving a seam, and then cut around this shape a piece of fabric for the back of the doll. Take the two pieces and sew them together so they face each other, leaving a hole, then turn this inside out. Stuff the doll with stuffing material and then sew the doll closed, and there you will have it: a modern voodoo doll.
