How To Make a Box Cushion In A Few Easy Steps

If you have never sewn before, you will probably want to find a book on beginning sewing before you begin this project. Overall, the project is not extremely difficult, but it does involve taking measurements and making a rudimentary pattern for your box cushions.

The first step will be to measure the area where you want the box cushion to fit. One way to do this and to keep track of what you are trying to do is to sketch out a rough plan, including the measurements. This does not have to be a masterpiece, especially since you are the only one using it. As long as you can understand your own diagram and include the correct dimensions, you will be just fine. Measure the width and depth of the area you want the cushions for.

Next, you need to find fabric to cover your cushion. Just about any type of upholstery fabric from your local craft store will probably work. Keep in mind that you may need to take the cover off and clean it occasionally, so either make sure the fabric is machine washable or at the very least dry cleanable. Often you can find upholstery fabrics that have been treated to repel stains. Looking for these types of fabrics can save you some work in the long run when it comes to cleaning! Make sure that you have enough fabric for the entire project. Usually the workers at the fabric store can help you figure out how much fabric you will need for the entire project. it can be frustrating if you discover you do not have enough and that the fabric store has sold out of the fabric in the meantime.

Choosing the foam for your box cushion can be done at the same time you are at the fabric or craft store. Usually you can find foam in pre-measured pieces. If you need a bigger piece however, you can find stores that sell foam by the yard instead of by the piece. When choosing a piece of foam, you will need a piece that is just about exactly the size of your measurements. You may want to choose a piece that is a tiny bit bigger than your project calls for, simply because the foam will be squished in on itself a little when it is encased in the fabric.

Cutting the pieces for the box cushion and sewing them together probably will not actually be that difficult once you understand the process. You will probably want to refer to a sewing handbook to get specifics on certain ways of sewing, but overall it is fairly straight forward. You will need about seven pieces of fabric when you are done cutting the fabric. One piece each for the top and bottom, and one piece for each for each of the sides. The only exception is the side that you will slide the cushion in from. Usually, zippers are used as a closure for cushions, since this can help access the fabric if you need to wash it.

This is a very general overview of what supplies and concepts you will need to think about when you decide to construct your own set of box cushions. If you take your time and use some common sense, your cushions should turn out just fine. especially when you are doing a little bit more advanced sewing work such as inserting a zipper. Regardless of how fancy or plain you make your cushions, you will probably be the only one who even knows there are mistakes. After all, we are all our own worst critics.
