How To Play Violin: A Guide



Many people identify the violin with classical music, but there are many musicians that use this instrument to compose modern pieces. Violin is an instrument that is best to learn while being at an early age.

The first step in learning how to play the violin is to look for a place to practice, where a straight back chair and a music stand will fit well.

Any violin student knows that first the violin has to be taken out the case and place on the lap.

Check the tension of the strings with the thumbs.

A piano is perfect to tune the violin. You will need to repeat the important notes a few times until you string well the violin.

Your left hand must reach the upper body, to assume the position for playing the violin.

The base of the violin should be placed under the chin.

Use the left shoulder as a support from underneath.

The violin level has to be kept with the left hand.

The right thumb has to be near the bridge, on the corner of the fingerboard.

The index finger is placed on the top of the G string.

The D string must be pressured lightly.

For a steady rhythm, pluck the G string.

A steady rhythm is acquired playing will D, A, and E strings.

Make a mixture of sounds to master the strings.

You will notice that the D and A notes on the treble chef are on the bottom line and the second space.

The bow has to be tighten well before you start.

The right thumb has to land on the inside area of the bow.

Middle fingers must cover the outer part of the bow.

With the index finger, touch the top of the bow stick.

The frog end of the bow must rest on the G string.

Make the string vibrate to see how it sounds.

Making an up bow is simple, if you reverse the direction and you move the bow on the string.

Use medium slow or normal speed when moving the bow over the strings.

Repeat until what you hear is a pleasant sound for the human ear.

For a left handed, you will need to put the left thumb under the violin neck.

Try a few pizzicato notes on the G string.

Use the fingertip to press the G string in order to obtain the desired effect.

When playing two pizzicato notes on the same string, you will get a hang of an octave.

Try the A and the G with the index finger to notice the difference in the sound and repeat until you hear their match in pitch.

The lower A sound will match the upper A sound while you adjust the finger on the G string.

With the middle finger on the G string, but closing the bridge, you will obtain another sound.

The note that will result will be B.

If you play the following combination: B, A, G, A, B, B, B, you will hear the first notes from "Mary had a little lamb".

You can repeat all these steps, but with the bow, to play violin.
