How To Write A Letter Of Intent: Selling Yourself For The Best Deal

When you want to subscribe yourself on a successful career path, be it that you are a student on the brink of graduation, or you want to show your abilities in order to get accepted in a reputable university, you need to know how to write a letter of intent. Think of the letter of intent as a personal sales pitch, where the product that is to be sold is yourself.

Whom is the letter of intent to go to? When you want to apply for a school or an university, you will need to know who is in charge and who has a word to say if you get accepted or not. These are the people that the letter of intent must be addressed to.

You will need the name and the address of the person in charge. As a letter of intent is your first contact with the educational institution, you do not want to start on the left foot, by sending the letter out there, with no name on the envelope. There are little chances that the letter will reach the right person, if it does not have a name on it for recognition. Just make a phone call and find out the right details.

A letter of intent is a very formal letter that you need to write in the same way that you would write a business letter. First, you need to make it look professional. For that, you need a font like Arial, or Times New Roman. In the first paragraph, let the reader know your name and who you are. Details like the school you follow, what year you are in, and other things, must be mentioned here. Your purpose with the school is very important, so, if you want to be part of the basketball team, mention why you would be the right person to be accepted.

After that, it is advisable to say a few words about how you discovered the school and why you are so interested into getting accepted by them.

The main body of the letter must contain the reasons why you should get accepted by them. Your credentials come right in place here. A list of achievements will do just fine, but remember to list only real things about you, as going over the top and lying will not help you.

After you are done with the list of accomplishments, compliment the readers and their school, by saying a few nice words. This must be done with dignity, in a way that will not make the readers feel that you are trying to impress them rather with lip service than with your abilities.

Towards the end, it would be a good idea to suggest that you expect to be given an answer. For that, list your name, address and other contact details.

In the end, use a finishing formula, such as "Sincerely", followed by your signature.

Remember to comprise all the information in only one page.

Typos or misspelled words will not do you good, so remember to proofread the letter of intent before sending it.

Two heads are better than one. Do not hesitate to ask a more experienced friend, or a student advisor about what they think on your letter of intent and what are their ideas about how to improve it.

It is advisable to make a copy after your letter before sending it. It may happen that the letter gets lost during transportation, and you will need to have another one to send again.
