How to Avoid the Dangers of Chromium Picolinate
|
The most popular of chromium based supplements is chromium picolinate, so this particular product was the subject of a study carried in 2002, and published by Alternative Medicine Research. The study we mention here claimed that there are no dangerous side effects of this supplement and there are no such things as mutagenic capabilities. Furthermore, the study showed that excess of chromium reaches the kidneys and then it is expelled from the body. No everybody agrees, however. Another study, that was published by Mutation Research showed evidence that cells that had to deal with a large quantity of chromium, have experienced DNA errors. On the other hand, there may be some truth in this conclusion, as FDA decided to reduce the recommended daily dose of chromium, based on some studies that showed a similar effect on experiments done on hamsters. Still What makes the whole deal rather annoying is that later on, the same Mutation Research publication established that the mice based study was erroneous, as the exposure to chromium picolinate was forced beyond conceivable limits. Which means that there is no actual proof that chromium picolinate is dangerous, indeed. Confusing, right? Inconclusive What can we make of these researches and their conclusions? Nothing much, actually. If the dose of chromium the hamsters were exposed to was way over the recommended dose, we still do not know what a regular dose taken for enough time will do. This can be called only inconclusive research and we cannot give them credit, just like that. This whole deal resembles quite a lot with the saccharin case, when a study that showed that the substance had carcinogenic effects, and that led to warning labels put on the product. Still, when another study showed that the results of the first study were false, as the hamsters used in the experiment were much overexposed to saccharin, the danger was considered to be false, as well, and the safety labels disappeared. Chromium seems just as another saccharin. The truth is we dont know whether it is dangerous or not, and no study proved something palpable. It is best to avoid consuming too much chromium picolinate as a weight loss supplement, and to try it only for shorter periods of time.
