How to Build a Tiki Bar


A tiki bar can be a wonderful addition to a backyard or patio, and can really add a fun aspect to your summer parties or simple gatherings. Though you can buy a tiki bar from any number of places, if you are a fairly handy person it could be fun to learn how to build a tiki bar yourself.

Here are a few basic steps to help with how to build a tiki bar, and they are general enough so that you can add your own special touches or change the design slightly one way or the other. After all, if you are going to go to the trouble of building your own tiki bar, you want it to reflect your own unique style!

You will need basic tools such as a hammer, flathead and Phillips screwdrivers, various sized nails, pliersbasically you will just want a tool kit nearby that has a wide variety of tools and materials in it. You also want bamboo in a sturdy thickness, bamboo strips for tying and decorating, wood for the top counter, finish for the wood, industrial strength glue and good, clean, fresh straw. You might also want to consider a good fake straw, as you would not have to replace it as often. Once you have these things, and anything else you can think of that you want to add to your tiki bar, wait until a nice sunny day and start building. Do a good enough job and your friends and neighbors will be asking you to show them how to build a tiki bar.

Start with your basic frame. You want a counter and legs beneath it. Use a sturdy, heat and cold resistant wood for your service counter, cut to the size that you want. Don't worry about putting a weather-proofing finish on it yet; you can do that when the bar is finished. You can use wood for the legs of your bar, but when it comes to how to build a tiki bar many people prefer three or more sturdy sticks of bamboo for the legs, lashed together with bamboo strips. It's a great look and if you use good quality bamboo the legs are very sturdy.
