How to Buy The Right Fishing Rods

Fishing rods are one of the most crucial pieces of fishing equipment and can pretty much make or break your fishing experience. Here are some basic factors that you can take into consideration which buying a rod for freshwater fishing:

a.) Length of the rod: The length of the rod will change based on the type of fish you intend to catch with it. Four and a half foot to six foot rods are best suited for lighter bait and fish. Like for instance perch and crappie. Rods that are longer in length are good for bigger baits and fishes like bass and catfish that are rougher. For ocean fishing or longer casting you can go for rods that are longer than six feet in length. Consider going for telescopic rods for longer lengths as these are easy to maintain and transport.

b.) Weight of the rod: Rod weight is also known as its power value. Rods are differentiated based on their power value as ultra light, light, medium light, medium, medium heavy, heavy and ultra heavy rods. The type of rod that you should be buying will depend mainly on the type of fish you are going to catch with it. Ultra light rods being more sensitive (responsive) are best suited for catching small fish varieties like bait fish or pan fish. You can consider going for heavier rods in-case you intend to go for deep sea fishing or surf fishing.

c.) Sensitivity of the rod: This is a factor that not many of us are bothered about, but rod sensitivity can play a major role in ensuring you produce more hook ups especially when you are catching smaller varieties of fish. The more sensitive the rod the better. So how do you test for sensitivity? It's simple. Take a friend along with you to the shop. To test rod sensitivity place the tip of the rod against your friend's Adam's apple and ask him to speak in a low voice. If you are able to sense the vibrations at your end of the rod (the butt end) then you have a winner.

d.) Number of pieces: If you are buying a rod which is around 4 and a half foot to six foot in length you can consider going for a one piece rod. One piece rods are rods that are not joined in between using a ferrule. They are one piece from the butt to the tip. One piece rods give the most natural feel and most people swear by this experience. Although this is not to say that two piece rods are bad. In-fact your only option in case of most long rods would be two piece. Two piece rods if well made come very close to the natural feel that a one piece rod can offer. This is especially true in case of well engineered tubular glass or carbon fiber rods.

e.) Rod Action: The rod action refers to the bending ability of the rod. Rods can be classified as extra fast, fast, moderate fast, moderate and slow based on how much and where they bend while casting or which having fish at the end of the line. For all round fishing the best rod to go for is a fast action rod. This is because fast action rods give you longer casts by putting more force into your throw.

f.) Flexibility: The more flexible the rod the better. To test for flexibility, hold the rod in your hand as if you are casting and flip the end. Watch the tip move. If the tip has good movement and moves up and down quickly then it is a good pole.

g.) Smooth taper: A good rod should taper from butt to the tip in a gradual, smooth and progressive manner. There should not be any dead spots or loose joints in the middle.

h.) Rod Grip: The best way to test a rod for grip is to hold it in your hands and see if it fits snugly in your palm. A snug fit is extremely important and can pretty much make or break your fishing experience. So make sure to go for rods that are a perfect fit.

i.) Rod Series: If you plan on buying different lengths of rods for different conditions then the best way to do this would be to go for the same rod series. For instance, quantum teton rods or ugly sticks. This will ensure that you do not have to test and buy each rod individually. If you like the 5 foot version of a rod you are sure to like the six inch version as well.

Happy Fishing!
