How to Care for Fine Lingerie
|
The most common fabrics for lingerie include cotton, seersucker, polyester, burn out fabric, charmeuse, silky lycra, jersey, cotton terry, chenille, cuddleskin and stretch satin. For the most part, many types of lingerie can be machine washed with no problems. You should not; however, that if your lingerie contains a lot of embellishments, as many pieces of lingerie do, that you should opt for hand washing instead. If you decide to hand wash your lingerie, you should know that you need to switch to a non-powder based detergent in order to accomplish the job. This is because most powder based detergents are not made to break down in cold water and it will therefore be difficult to clean your laundry. Choose a gentle liquid hand washing soap or a detergent that is specially made for cold water washing. There is also a certain technique to hand washing fine lingerie. First, you should allow your lingerie to soak for a few moments and then gently swirl them. Avoid the temptation to rub or agitate them in order to remove spots. The soaking and swirling should take care of that. Next, empty the water and refill with cold water and swirl the lingerie once again gently to rinse out the soap. Never, ever wring your lingerie. This will surely damage it as well as create wrinkles. Excess water will vacate when you allow the garment to drip dry. If you have no choice but to wash your lingerie in the machine, be as careful as possible with by choosing the gentle cycle. Many of the newer washing machines today sport a hand washing cycle and this would also be acceptable. Whenever possible; however, keep in mind that it is always best to wash silk lingerie by hand. This is because silk simply cannot handle the agitation of a washing machine, even if it is on the gentle cycle. While you may not notice any damage to your lingerie the first time you wash it in the washing machine, over time, it will begin to break down. You can preserve the life of your fine lingerie by simply hand washing it. Like any other types of laundry, you will need to make a point to separate your lingerie based on color. Ivory or white lingerie should always be separated from lingerie with bright colors. Keep in mind that you need to wash your white lingerie in warm water and your brights in cold or cool water. When it comes time to remove your lingerie from the washing machine, always steer clear of the dryer. Your fine lingerie should never be placed in the dryer. Make room in your laundry room to hang your lingerie on padded hangers or a hanging rack and allow it to drip dry. If you want the item to preserve its shape you can also lay it flat on a table or hard surface and allow the lingerie to dry that way as well.
