How to Choose a Franchise Business

Choosing a franchise business is a lot like choosing any other type of business in some ways, and in other ways, there are major differences. The fact is that no matter what your interests are, there is probably a franchise opportunity available for a business that matches your personal interests, or a need in your community.

The first step to choosing any business is to determine what your skills and interests are, and then to compare those interests and skills to what is needed in your community. Once you have this information, you are ready to search for a franchise business that you can get started.

There are currently more than 4000 franchise opportunities in more than 75 industries. Depending on the industry type that you are interested in, your choices may be limited, but for many industries, the choices are unlimited, which makes it very difficult to decide which one is the best for your business.

Franchises offer potential business owners the opportunity to get their own businesses started, without all of the headaches associated with starting a business from scratch. You still have plenty of decisions to make, but the franchise will have guidelines that must be followed, which in reality makes it much easier. For some, however, these guidelines will be to restrictive.

For this reason, it is important to understand exactly what you are getting into when you buy into a franchise. First, you should obtain a copy of the franchises Uniform Franchise Offering Circular (UFOC). This document should lay everything that is expected out for you. It should also tell you what you can expect from the company in terms of training and support.

You should also obtain a copy of the franchise agreement that you will be expected to sign. Take this agreement, along with the UFOC to your business lawyer and accountant for inspection. Set aside time with these professionals to go over every aspect of both legal documents, and make sure that you understand what you will be agreeing to, as well as what the franchise will be agreeing to.

Talk to other franchisee's before making a decision. These are other people who already own franchises through the same franchised business that you are looking into. The Franchise will usually provide you with franchisees to contact as part of the UFOC. You can call these business owners, but call one's that are not on the list as well. This may take a little leg work on your part, but it will be well worth it.

Have a list of questions to ask, such as how much support is given by the franchise, problems that they have had with the franchise, rules that are hard to abide by or unreasonable rules, and things of this nature. You want to know ahead of time what potential problems you may run into with the franchise company. In some cases, just talking to these business owners will tell you if this is the right franchise opportunity for you or not.

Keep in mind that the franchise opportunity must be more than just something you are interested in. There must be a need or desire for such a business in your community. It is okay if there is competition in your community, but too much competition is hazardous to your potential success. Try to look for a franchise opportunity that will work well in your community - with little or no competition.

Choosing the right franchise opportunity for you takes a little work, but in the end, it is usually easier than starting your own business from scratch because the franchise does have guidelines, and a model to follow for success. However, there are many scam operations out there as well, and any franchise opportunity should be investigated thoroughly before you invest any money.
