How to Choose a Good Cosmetic Surgeon

When the decision is made to have cosmetic surgery, it is naturally a sensitive issue and you want to insure that you receive the very best and most reliable care available. Not only do you need to select a surgeon that that has the best technical skill, but you will also want to look for a doctor that that will approach your care with compassion and understanding as well as a high level of professionalism. While all of these factors are a tall order to fill, taking the time to perform some research and understanding all of the facts related to cosmetic surgery can help you to make an informed choice regarding your care.

One of the most important aspects regarding cosmetic surgery that you should understand when beginning your search for the right cosmetic surgeon is the sheer diversity of this medical profession. Cosmetic surgeons frequently specialize in a wide variety of areas and bring a multitude of experience and training to your care. Look for a cosmetic surgeon that specializes in the area of cosmetic surgery that interests you.

As you would when searching for any other healthcare professional it is always important to verify credentials. Look for a cosmetic surgeon that has a membership with a professional organization and find out exactly what the requirements are for membership within that organization.

In addition look for certification by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery; which is the only certifying Board to require examination in the field of cosmetic surgery. The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery has very stringent requirements for membership. In order to be certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, a physician must meet the following requirements:

1. Have already attained certification in surgical specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

2. Have been in the practice of cosmetic surgery for the past five years

3..Have performed no fewer than 1,000 cosmetic surgical procedures

4. Have performed a minimum of 200 documented cosmetic procedures in the year leading to certification

5. Pass a stringent two-day oral and written examination;

6. Be of good moral character.

As you begin to narrow down the possibilities in order to determine the right cosmetic surgeon for your needs there are several questions that you should pose.

Find out how much surgical experience the surgeon you are considering possesses. Have they specialized in the area or procedure that interests you?

How many relevant procedures has the doctor performed?

What is the average number of procedures per year this doctor performs?

Be sure to ask to view before and after photographs. This can give you an idea of the surgeon’s ability, but keep in mind that every patient is different and the results viewed in before and after photographs cannot be guaranteed from one patient to another.

Be sure to obtain specific information about the cost of your surgery and financing options.

Finally, ask yourself if you feel comfortable with this surgeon. Do you feel at ease with the staff? Are your questions answered thoroughly or do you feel as though you are being rushed from the appointment? Remember that even though a surgeon may possess a wealth of experience he or she may not be the right doctor for you if you do not feel a personal rapport. Avoid surgeons that include so much medical jargon and terminology in their responses and explanations that you find it difficult to follow the explanation of your procedure. Look for a doctor who will explain the procedure to you in easy to understand layman’s terms.
