Those of us who are true animal lovers know how important veterinarians can be in the health and safety of our furry critters. If you are considering obtaining a new pet or you or moving to a new location, it’s a good idea to make it a point to find a good veterinarian as soon as possible rather than waiting until there’s an emergency and then attempting to find a good health care provider for your furry friend. Keep in mind that it’s just as important to find a professional, helpful veterinarian for your pet’s healthcare needs as it is to find a professional, qualified doctor for your own healthcare. Depending on where you are located, you may have many choices in terms of which veterinarian to select. In this case, you will need to take several factors in mind when making your decision. First, consider the type of pet that you have. If your pet is a regular domestic animal, such as a dog or cat, then you probably won’t need a veterinarian that specializes. If; however, you have or plan to obtain an exotic or rare animal, then just any veterinarian typically won’t do. You need a veterinarian who has specific experience in caring for and treating your specific pet. If you have trouble locating a veterinarian who specializes in rare or exotic animals, consider contacting your local ASPCA chapter. They may be able to provide referrals or suggestions. Veterinarians who do not specialize in such animals may also prove to be a wealth of information in providing referrals for veterinarians who do care for such animals. Also consider asking other individuals you know with exotic or rare pets for referrals. Along the same line, it’s a good idea to ask for referrals for veterinarians when attempting to locate a good domestic veterinarian. Also, consider whether you need a vet that will make house calls. While most doctors these days won’t make house calls, there are many vets who still do. This is particularly true in rural areas where vets may need to come to the home in order to care for farm animals. Horses, cows and pigs may all need the assistance of a vet who is willing to make house calls. This saves you the trouble of loading a large animal into the trailer and making the drive to the closes veterinarian’s office. In cases of an emergency, it can also be a life saving measure to have a vet who is willing to come to you. When you have obtained the names of several veterinarians that you would like to consider, take the time to make an appointment in order to meet and visit with the veterinarian as well as the staff. This is extremely important. You don’t want to wait until you have an emergency to discover that the veterinarian you have chosen has a poor ‘bedside’ manner with your beloved pet. It’s also a good idea to ask if you can tour the facility. This will give you an opportunity to observe whether the office and clinic are clean. You should also take this chance to observe the overall environment of the facility and make a determination regarding whether the veterinarian and his/her staff are friendly, caring and ready to answer questions that pet owners might have. When interviewing the veterinarian, find out whether he/she belongs to any professional organizations and/or local human societies. You should also ask what process the vet follows when he/she is not able to care for their patients. Finally, after you have selected a veterinarian, make a point to bring your pet for a visit with the veterinarian and staff. This will help your pet to become more comfortable around the vet and staff, lessening their discomfort during routine health care check-ups and emergencies.
