How to Cut Plexiglass - It is Easier than you Might Think

Plexiglass is a type of material that looks like real glass. Yet it is more affordable and it won't break as easily once it is in place. Yet many consumers avoid using it because they have experienced difficulties with cutting it correctly. They get frustrated trying various saws as well as saw blades to cut the plexiglass without incident. Once you learn the right way to cut it though you will find it to be extremely easy. Your work will look like a professional did it for you.

The reason that so many people have trouble cutting plexiglass has to do with the way in which it is made. It contains mainly soft acrylic which means it is highly sensitive to the use of heat. When you are using a saw blade to cut plexiglass there is heat generated. You may find in some areas that it melts as you cut it or that it is chipping. This can be extremely frustrating.

The saw blade you use is definitely going to matter, so take the time to measure how thick your plexiglass is. The thinner that it is the more likely it is going to chip. You want to use a saw blade with many teeth on thin plexiglass. The softer that it is though the fewer teeth you want to see on the saw blade. You can get great results with either a table saw or a circular saw. Avoid using a saber saw even though many people have been tempted to do just that.

You need to keep the plexiglass cool as you are cutting it. A thin stream of coolant is exactly what you need in order to accomplish this. You may want to have someone help you to keep everything in place as you complete the cutting of the plexiglass. If you notice some minor chipping then continue the process. You can use a piece of fine sandpaper to smooth it out.

Should you find that you are getting excessive chipping in the plexiglass though you need to change saw blades. Otherwise you are going to end up with a cut that you aren't happy with. It is a good idea for safety reasons to use both gloves and goggles when you cut plexiglass. That way you can be sure you won't get any of the pieces in your skin or your eyes.

With some patience and experimentation you will soon be cutting plexiglass like an expert. Instead of shying away from such materials you can start to use it more and more.
