How to Find Cheap Construction Materials

When you decide to remodel your home, you may be shocked at the prices of the construction materials that you will need. The price of wood is out of this world. In fact, almost everything that is made out of our natural resources is expensive. However, before you decide that you can't afford the construction materials you will need for your project, look at all of your options.

First, look for sales at the lumber yards. If you can purchase your materials when they are on sale, and store them until you have all of the construction materials that you need, you can save money. You will need a cool, flat, dry place to store materials. Avoid storing anything on the grass or dirt, however, you can purchase pallets at lumber yards, and cover things with tarps, but this option should not be used for the long term.

Take a look at the remodeling job that you will be doing, and determine if you will have any existing construction materials that you will be able to use. For instance, if you are removing a wall, you may be able to use the wood, paneling, trim, and even insulation may all be reusable, if you are careful and you plan ahead.

Habitat for Humanity also has a chain of stores called Habitat ReStore. These are building materials for homes. The materials are either a surplus that the Habitat for Humanity has, or it is salvaged materials from old buildings. The materials are in great shape, and the discounts are huge. You can find your nearest Habitat ReStore or Habitat for Humanity by looking in your local telephone directory.

Another option is to tear down buildings in exchange for the materials. Many people have old buildings on their property that they want torn down for a variety of reasons. If you have a truck, you can advertise that you will tear down buildings and haul away the mess in exchange for the materials. Sometimes, people advertise that they have a building that they want torn down in exchange for the materials. Most people are very agreeable to this, however, you need to make it clear that you get first pick of the salvageable materials - not them. But by doing this, you get lots of construction materials at little or no cost to you.

Finally, when you see someone else doing construction on their home, you can stop and ask them what they will be doing with their left over materials, and try to work out a deal for a good price. Tell them what you are looking for, such as whole pieces of wood or scraps. Often, people accidentally purchase more materials than they need to do the job, and at the end of it, they are stuck with the leftovers. Usually, you can get a great deal.

Before you drive a long way to save a little money on construction materials, remember the fuel prices. If you aren't saving very much on the materials, the trip may not be worth it, and it may end up costing you more in the long run. If you will have to rent storage space to store your construction materials, this is another cost to consider before you can determine if you will be saving any money.
