How to Find Free Stuff for Single Parents

Finances are often tight for single parents. You try to save as much money as possible, but still have difficulty paying the bills. Finding free stuff for single parents can definitely help your budget.

Freecycle, a yahoogroup that you can join, allows people to email the group members with items that they want to get rid of for no cost. You generally just have to be the first person to email them back in order to get the free item. Many types of items are available, and if you are patient, you will often eventually find just what you are looking for.

Online want ads such as Craigslist can be another source of free items. Check the free stuff section for your area. Also, try the barter section as you may be able to trade something you don't need or a service for something that you really want.

You may be able to find coupons that offer products for free. Look in your area newspaper or online for coupons. You might also ask friends and neighbors to give you their coupon inserts so that you can collect several of each coupon that you are looking for.

If you're adventurous and don't mind getting dirty, dumpster diving can be a source of freebies. If you're looking for large items like furniture, pay attention to when garbage day is in affluent neighborhoods. Then, take a drive through the neighborhood the night before. You may be surprised at what you can find just sitting at the curb.

Ask for samples if your doctor prescribes a medication for you. Before filling a namebrand prescription, look at the manufacturer's website online to see if any coupons are available. Some offer a free supply for a month as incentive to try their drug.

If you need specific items or sizes of clothing, spread the word to your friends and coworkers. Often, people prefer to give their items to someone deserving that they know rather than to a charity. Be sure to give your outgrown clothes and unwanted items to other people whenever possible.

Hungry? Before you get in your car, find out if the restaurant has a kids eat free night. Some family chains offer a night where one or two kids get free meals if an accompanying adult buys a meal.

For a large selection of miscellaneous freebies, try online freebie sites. Free t-shirts, free software, product samples, etc., are often available.
