How to make wooden tree swings

Tree swings in the back yard provide children with much needed fun during play time and sometimes the adults too. Tree swings are quite easy to make with a little work and some prior preparation. Here's how:

The first thing you need a strong and tall tree for a swing. If you don't have one, it is not a good idea to still go ahead and build one on a small weak tree. Also it is important that your tree has a strong branch at the correct height for a swing. The ideal measurements are ten feet high and eight inches in diameter. A high swing will also ‘swing' better, although too high and it isn't safe for small children.

Building the swing

There is very little building really - you just require a plank of wood. However, a good quality plank of wood is essential to comfort or the swing will be largely ignored. Pick out wood plank from the lumber store. The standard size for a wooden plank is about 6 feet. You will require something that is 8 inch wide and about 1-2 inch thick. Also, pick one that is resistant to rot and insects, especially termite resistant. One 6 feet plant will be more than enough and you will usually get it for free. The plank needs to be cut into 18 inch pieces -- that's about a foot and a half. Now drill four holes in the four corners (two holes are okay, but four are safe) The holes needs to be about half inch in diameter and one inch from the side and two inches from the top and bottom.

Tie it down:

The rope is the most important part when it comes to ensuring safety so a good quality, thick rope is essential. It needs to be at least .75 inches in diameter. A carnamental, like they one used for belaying by mountaineers is the strongest. The length of the rope depends on the height of the tree branch.

Tying the rope onto the tree branch can be a challenge. An extension can come to your rescue and you can slip the rope over the tree branch allowing both ends to hang. In case you do not possess an extension ladder, you will need a good aim and a good arm. Put a baseball in a sock and then tie the sock to one end. Now throw the sock over the tree branch. Do this with both the ropes. Now force the ends of the ropes through the holes of the swing and tie up each pair. Ensure that the knots are tight. Burn off the ends using a propane torch. Your swing is ready.
